The Prophet ﷺ was the best of people in character. I had a younger brother called Abu Umayr. The narrator said, I think he said he had just been weaned. Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came and saw him, he would say, "Abu Umayr, what happened to the little nughayr?" He used to play with him.
كان النبي ﷺ أحسن الناس خلقا، وكان لي أخ يقال له: أبو عمير، قال: أحسبه قال: كان فطيما، قال: فكان إذا جاء رسول الله ﷺ فرآه قال: يا أبا عمير! ما فعل النغير؟ قال فكان يلعب به.
Bukhari narrated it in his Al-Adab (6203) and Muslim in Al-Adab (30:2150), both through the route of Abdul-Warith, from Abu Tayah, from Anas bin Malik, who said, and he mentioned it.Tirmidhi said in Ash-Shamail (236), Part of the understanding of this hadith is that the Prophet ﷺ used to joke. He only said to him, "O Abu Umayr, what happened to the little sparrow" because he had a little sparrow he used to play with, and it died, so the boy grieved over it, and the Prophet ﷺ joked with him and said, "O Abu Umayr..." and the rest of the hadith.His saying "an-nughayr" is with the letter nun vowelled with damma, a diminutive of "nughar," which is a small bird whose plural is "nughran."
