Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Clothing (5897) from Musa bin Ismail, who said, Salam narrated to us, from Uthman bin Abdullah bin Wahb, who said, "I went in to see Umm Salama, and she brought out to us..." the hadith. And it was narrated with the same meaning from Abu Hurairah, that he was asked, "Did the Messenger of Allah ﷺ dye his hair?" He said, "Yes." However, its chain of transmission is daif.Tirmidhi narrated it in Shamail (45) from Sufyan bin Waki, who said, my father narrated to us, from Sharik, from Uthman bin Mawhab, who said, "Abu Hurairah was asked," and he mentioned it.In this chain is Sharik, who is Ibn Abdullah Nakhai, the judge. Although he was truthful, he used to make many mistakes, and this hadith is among those in which he erred, for he contradicted the reliable and firmly established narrators, among them Israil, Salam bin Salim, and Nasr bin Abu Ashath, who narrated it from Uthman bin Mawhab, from Umm Salama, as found in Sahih Bukhari (5898, 5897, 5899). Tirmidhi likewise faulted it on this basis, saying, "Abu Awana narrated this hadith from Uthman bin Abdullah bin Mawhab, and said, 'from Umm Salama.'"In the chain is Sufyan bin Waki, and he is one whose hadith is discarded, because he did not accept correction regarding the matter of his scribe, who used to insert into his work things that were not from his own hadith.
