On the day Mecca was conquered, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ divided the spoils among the Quraysh, and the Ansar were upset by this.The Prophet ﷺ said, "Are you not pleased that the people should go away with worldly gains, while you go away with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?"They replied, "Yes indeed."He said, "If the people were to travel through a valley or a mountain pass, I would travel through the valley or pass of the Ansar."
لما كان يوم فتح مكة قسم رسول الله ﷺ غنائم بين قريش، فغضب الأنصار قال النبي ﷺ: أما ترضون أن يذهب الناس بالدنيا، وتذهبون برسول الله ﷺ؟ قالوا: بلى، قال: لو سلك الناس واديا وشعبا لسلكت وادي الأنصار أو شعبهم.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Military Expeditions (4332), and Muslim in the Book of Zakat (1059:134), both from the hadith of Shubah, from Abu Tayah, who said, I heard Anas bin Malik say, and he mentioned it. The wording is that of Bukhari.In Muslim's version, the Ansar said, "This is truly astonishing, our swords are dripping with their blood, yet our spoils are being given back to them." This reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so he gathered them and said, and he mentioned something similar.His saying, "the day of the conquest of Makkah," means the time of the conquest of Makkah, because these spoils were the spoils of Hunayn, since there were no spoils from the conquest of Makkah.
