On the day of Hunayn, Umm Sulaym took up a dagger and kept it with her. Abu Talha saw it and said, "Messenger of Allah, this is Umm Sulaym, and she has a dagger with her."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked her, "What is this dagger?"She replied, "I took it so that if any of the polytheists comes near me, I will rip open his belly with it."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ began to laugh.She said, "Messenger of Allah, kill those who joined us afterwards from among the freed ones. They fled and abandoned you."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Umm Sulaym, Allah has sufficed and done well."
أن أم سليم اتخذت يوم حنين خنجرا فكان معها، فرآها أبو طلحة فقال: يا رسول الله هذه أم سليم معها خنجر، فقال لها رسول الله ﷺ: ما هذا الخنجر؟ قالت: اتخذته إن دنا مني أحد من المشركين بقرت به بطنه، فجعل رسول الله ﷺ يضحك، قالت: يا رسول الله! اقتل من بعدنا من الطلقاء، انهزموا بك، فقال رسول الله ﷺ: يا أم سليم! إن الله قد كفى وأحسن.
Muslim narrated it in Jihad and Expeditions (1809:134), from Abu Bakr bin Abu Shayba, who said, Yazid bin Harun related to us, who said, Hammad bin Salama informed us, from Thabit, from Anas bin Malik, who said, and then he mentioned it.
