Abu Musa reported that when the Prophet ﷺ finished the battle of Hunayn, he sent Abu Amir at the head of an army to Awtas. There he met Durayd bin Simma. Durayd was killed, and Allah routed his companions.Abu Musa said, "The Prophet sent me along with Abu Amir. Abu Amir was struck in the knee. A man from the Jusham tribe shot him with an arrow that lodged in his knee. I came up to him and said, 'Uncle, who shot you?'He pointed to the man and said, 'That one over there is my killer, the one who shot me.'So I made for him and caught up with him. When he saw me, he turned to flee, and I pursued him, calling out, 'Have you no shame? Will you not stand your ground?' He stopped, and we exchanged two strokes of the sword, and I killed him. Then I said to Abu Amir, 'Allah has killed your man.'He said, 'Pull out this arrow.' So I pulled it out, and water flowed from the wound. He said, 'Nephew, give my greetings of peace to the Prophet ﷺ and tell him to ask forgiveness for me.'Abu Amir appointed me as commander over the men. He lingered only a short while and then died. I returned and went in to see the Prophet ﷺ in his house. He was on a corded bed with a mattress on it, and the cords of the bed had left marks on his back and sides. I informed him of our news and the news of Abu Amir, and I said, 'He told me to ask you to seek forgiveness for him.'The Prophet called for water, performed ablution, then raised his hands and said, 'O Allah, forgive Ubayd Abu Amir.' I saw the whiteness of his armpits. Then he said, 'O Allah, place him on the Day of Resurrection above many of Your human creation.'I said, 'And for me, ask forgiveness as well.'He said, 'O Allah, forgive Abdullah bin Qays his sins, and admit him on the Day of Resurrection through a noble entrance.'"Abu Burda said, "One of these prayers was for Abu Amir, and the other was for Abu Musa."
Bukhari related it in the Book of Military Expeditions (4323), and Muslim in the Book of the Virtues of the Companions (2498:165), both through the route of Muhammad bin Ala, who said, Abu Usama narrated to us, from Burayd bin Abdullah, from Abu Burda, from Abu Musa, who said, and then he mentioned it.Abu Amir, his name was Ubayd bin Sulaym bin Hidhar Ashari, and he was the uncle of Abu Musa Ashari, and he was one of the senior companions.
