Sahl bin Hanzaliya reported,

They marched with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of Hunayn, pressing on at length until evening came and the time for prayer arrived in the presence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.A horseman came and said, "Messenger of Allah, I rode out ahead of you until I climbed such-and-such a mountain, and there I saw the tribe of Hawazin gathered in their entirety, with their womenfolk, livestock, and sheep, all assembled at Hunayn."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled and said, "That will be the spoils of the Muslims tomorrow, Allah willing."Then he said, "Who will keep watch over us tonight?"Anas bin Abu Marthad al-Ghanawi said, "I will, Messenger of Allah."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Then mount up."So he mounted his horse and came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who said to him, "Head toward this mountain pass and station yourself at its summit, and let us not be taken by surprise from your direction tonight."When morning came, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to his place of prayer, performed two units of prayer, then said, "Have you seen any sign of your horseman?"They said, "Messenger of Allah, we have seen no sign of him."The call to prayer was given, and as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was praying, he kept glancing toward the pass. When he completed his prayer and gave the closing salutation, he said, "Rejoice, for your horseman has come!"We began looking through the gaps in the trees of the pass, and there he was, having arrived. He stopped before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, greeted him, and said, "I went off until I reached the top of this pass, where the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had ordered me. When morning came, I surveyed both passes and looked carefully but saw no one."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked him, "Did you dismount during the night?"He replied, "No, except to pray or relieve myself."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "You have secured Paradise for yourself. It will not matter if you do nothing more after this."
