We went on a campaign with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ against Hawazin. While we were having our morning meal with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, a man came on a red camel, made it kneel, then pulled out a leather strap from his belt and tied the camel with it. He came forward and ate with the people, all the while looking around. Among us were some weak men with poor mounts, and some were on foot.Suddenly he ran out, came to his camel, untied it, made it kneel, mounted it, and drove it on. The camel sped off with him, and a man on a tawny she-camel pursued him.Salama said, "I set off running and reached the haunch of the she-camel, then advanced until I was at the haunch of the camel, then advanced further until I seized the camel's halter and made it kneel. When it placed its knee on the ground, I drew my sword and struck the man's head, and it flew off. Then I came leading the camel, with its saddle and weapons on it."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ met me with the people accompanying him and asked, "Who killed the man?"They said, "Ibn al-Akwa."He said, "He gets all his spoils."
Narrated by Muslim in the chapter on jihad and military expeditions (45:1754), and this is his wording, and by Bukhari in the chapter on jihad (3051), both through the route of Iyas bin Salama bin Akwa, from his father, who related it.As for Bukhari's wording, he said, a spy from the polytheists came to the Prophet ﷺ while he was on a journey. He sat with his companions, talking, then left. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Seek him out and kill him." So he was killed, and the Prophet gave his belongings as spoils to the one who killed him.
