The Prophet ﷺ sent Khalid bin Walid to the tribe of Banu Jadhimah, and he called them to Islam. They did not know how to say, "We have accepted Islam," so they kept saying, "We have changed our religion, we have changed our religion." Khalid began killing some of them and taking others captive, and he handed each of us a prisoner. Then one day Khalid ordered each of us to kill his prisoner.I said, "By Allah, I will not kill my prisoner, and none of my companions will kill his prisoner."We came to the Prophet ﷺ and told him what had happened. The Prophet ﷺ raised his hand and said, "O Allah, I disassociate myself before You from what Khalid has done," saying it twice.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Military Expeditions (4339), from Mahmud, who said, Abdul-Razzaq related to us, Maamar informed us, from Zuhri, from Salim, from his father, and he mentioned it. It is also found in Musannaf Abdul-Razzaq (9434). Jadhima (with a fatha on the jim and a kasra on the dhal) is the son of Amir bin Abdu Manat bin Kinanah, and this expedition took place right after the conquest of Makkah, in Shawwal, before setting out to Hunayn. This is because the Prophet ﷺ sent Khalid as a caller to Islam, not as a fighter, but he attacked the tribe of Jadhima and killed some of them.Ibn Ishaq mentioned this in the Sirah of Ibn Hisham (2/428), where he said, Hakeem bin Hakeem bin Abbad bin Hunayf related to me, from Abu Jafar Muhammad bin Ali, who said, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent Khalid bin Walid, when he had conquered Makkah, as a caller to Islam, not as a fighter, accompanied by tribes of the Arabs, Sulaym bin Mansur and Mudlij bin Murra, and they attacked the tribe of Jadhima bin Amir bin Abdu Manat bin Kinanah. When the people saw him, they took up their weapons, so Khalid said, "Lay down your weapons, for the people have already accepted Islam." However, this account is mursal. He also mentioned the statement of Jahdam, "Woe to you, Banu Jadhima, this is Khalid, by Allah! After laying down weapons comes nothing but captivity, and after captivity comes nothing but the striking of necks. By Allah, I will never lay down my weapon."He then also narrated, through another mursal report from Abu Jafar Muhammad bin Ali, who said, when they laid down their weapons, Khalid at that point ordered that they be bound. Then he had them brought forward for execution, and he killed those of them whom he killed. When the news reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he raised his hands to the sky and said, "O Allah, I disown before You what Khalid bin Walid has done."
