Regarding the dyeing of the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ hair, he said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had only a few grey hairs, but Abu Bakr and Umar after him dyed their hair with henna and katam."He continued, "Abu Bakr brought his father Abu Quhafa to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the day of the conquest of Mecca, carrying him until he placed him before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Abu Bakr, "If you had left the old man in his house, we would have come to him out of honor for Abu Bakr."Then Abu Quhafa accepted Islam, and his beard and head were white like the thaghamah plant. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Change the color of these, but avoid black."
Ahmad (12635), Bazzar in Kashf Astar (2981), and Abu Yaala (2831) narrated it. Ibn Hibban (5472) and Hakim (3/244) graded it sahih. All of them narrated it through the hadith of Ibn Salama, from Hisham bin Hassan, from Muhammad bin Sirin, who said, "Anas was asked, and he mentioned it." The wording given here is Ahmad's, and its isnad is sahih.Hakim said, "Sahih according to the criteria of the two sheikhs."I say, Muhammad bin Salama is Harrani, the teacher of Ahmad. Al-Bahili, none but Muslim narrated from him.Hakim also said, Ibn Wahb said (this is connected to the previous isnad), "Umar bin Muhammad informed me, from Zayd bin Aslam, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ congratulated Abu Bakr on his father's conversion to Islam." Its narrators are trustworthy. Umar bin Muhammad is Ibn Zayd bin Abdullah bin Umar bin Khattab, one of the narrators found in the Sahih collections. This is a rare practice, were it not that it contains an interruption in its chain, for Zayd bin Aslam, the freedman of Umar bin Khattab, was a trustworthy successor who used to narrate in mursal form.As for the issue of avoiding black, it will come up in its proper place.
