The Messenger of Allah ﷺ sent us to Idam. I set out with a group of Muslims, among them Abu Qatada Harith bin Rubai and Muhallim bin Jaththama bin Qays. We went on until we reached the valley of Idam, where Amir Ashjai passed by us on a young camel of his, carrying his belongings and a skin of milk. As he passed he greeted us with peace, so we held back from him, but Muhallim bin Jaththama charged at him and killed him over some grudge between the two of them, then seized his camel and his goods. When we came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and told him what had happened, the Quran was revealed concerning us, "Believers, when you go forth in the cause of Allah, verify matters carefully, and do not say to one who offers you peace, 'You are not a believer,' seeking the fleeting gains of this world. With Allah there are abundant spoils. You yourselves were once like that, and Allah bestowed His favor upon you, so verify matters carefully. Surely Allah is aware of all that you do" [Nisa 4:94].
Narrated by Imam Ahmad (23881), Ibn Abu Shayba (38168), and Ibn Jarud (777), all through the route of Muhammad bin Ishaq, "Yazid bin Abdullah bin Qusayt told me, from Qaqa bin Abdullah bin Abu Hadrad, from his father Abdullah bin Abu Hadrad," and he related it. Its chain is hasan because of Qaqa bin Abdullah, for Yahya bin Saeed Ansari and Yazid bin Abdullah bin Qusayt both narrated from him, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him among his trustworthy narrators. There is disagreement over whether he was a companion, but the correct view is that he was not a companion, and his hadith is hasan. Muhammad bin Ishaq explicitly stated that he narrated directly, as found in the version of Ahmad. It is narrated from Ibn Abu Hadrad Aslami that he mentioned that he married a woman, then came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ seeking his help with her dowry. He said, "How much did you pledge as dowry?" I said, "Two hundred dirhams." He said, "Even if you were scooping up dirhams from this valley of yours, I would not increase what I have to give you." He said, then I stayed for a while, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called me and sent me on a raiding expedition he dispatched toward Najd. He said, "Go out with this expedition, perhaps you will gain something, and I will grant it to you as a bonus."He said, so we set out until we reached the encampment in the evening. He said, when the darkness of the evening had passed, our commander sent us out in pairs. He said, so we surrounded the encamped group, and he said, "When I say the takbir and charge, you say the takbir and charge with me." And when he sent us out in pairs, he said, "Do not separate from each other, for I will ask each of you about the news of his companion, and if I do not find it with him, and do not go too far in pursuit."He said, then when we were about to charge, I heard a man from the encampment shout, "Oh Khadra!" so I took it as a good omen that we would capture from them someone named Khadra. He said, then when we launched our attack, our commander said the takbir and charged, and we said the takbir and charged with him. He said, then a man passed by me with a sword in his hand, so I followed him. My companion said to me, "Our commander has instructed us not to go too far in pursuit, so turn back." But when I saw nothing but to follow him, he said, "By Allah, either you turn back or I will go back to him and tell him that you refused." I said, "By Allah, I will follow him."He said, so I followed him until, when I drew near to him, I shot him with an arrow that struck the ridge of his back, and he fell. He said, "Come near, O Muslim, to Paradise." When he saw that I would not come near him, I shot him with another arrow that wounded him severely. He struck at me with his sword but missed me, and I took the sword and killed him with it, and I cut off his head with it. Then we loaded up much livestock and sheep. He said, then we set off back.He said, then in the morning I found that my camel was tied together with a camel carrying a beautiful young woman. He said, she kept turning to look behind her and saying the takbir. I said to her, "Why do you keep turning around?" She said, "Toward a man, by Allah, if he is alive, he mixed among you." He said, I said, thinking she meant my companion whom I had killed, "By Allah, I did kill him, and this is his sword, hanging from the saddle of the camel I am riding."He said, but the sword's sheath had nothing in it, and it was hanging from the saddle of her camel. When I said that to her, she said, "Then here, take this sheath and smell it, if you are telling the truth." He said, so I took it and smelled it, and it matched perfectly. He said, when she saw that, she wept.He said, then we arrived before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he gave me from that livestock which we had brought back with us.Ahmad narrated it (23882) from Yaqub, that is, Ibn Ibrahim bin Saad bin Ibrahim bin Abdul-Rahman bin Awf Zuhri, "My father told us, from Abdullah bin Jafar, from Abdul-Wahid bin Abu Awn, from his grandmother, from Ibn Abu Hadrad Aslami," and he related it. Its chain is daif because Abdul-Wahid bin Abu Awn's grandmother is unidentified.
