Miswar bin Makhrama and Marwan bin Hakam reported,

In the peace agreement made by the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with Quraysh on the day of Hudaybiyyah, it was stipulated that whoever wished to enter into the pact and covenant of Muhammad could do so, and whoever wished to enter into the pact and covenant of Quraysh could do so. Khuza hastened forward and said, "We enter into the pact and covenant of Muhammad ﷺ." Banu Bakr hastened forward and said, "We enter into the pact and covenant of Quraysh."They remained under that truce for about seventeen or eighteen months. Then Banu Bakr, who had entered into the pact and covenant of Quraysh, attacked Khuza, who had entered into the pact and covenant of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, by night at a watering place of theirs called al-Watir, near Makkah. Quraysh said, "Muhammad will not learn of our involvement, this is night and no one will see us." So they aided Banu Bakr against Khuza with horses and weapons, and fought alongside them out of spite toward the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.Amr bin Salim rode to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ when this affair between Khuza and Banu Bakr at al-Watir had taken place, until he reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in Madinah to inform him of what had happened. He had composed some lines of poetry, and when he came before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, he recited them to him,O Allah, I call upon Muhammad by the ancient alliance of our father and his father. You were as a parent and we were as a child, then we accepted Islam and never withdrew our hand. So grant aid, Messenger of Allah, ready aid, and summon the servants of Allah to come as reinforcements. Among them is the Messenger of Allah, fully prepared, his face darkening if any disgrace is imposed, in a host like the sea flowing with foaming waves. Indeed Quraysh have broken their promise to you and violated your firm covenant. They claim I have no one to turn to, yet they are more lowly and fewer in number. They have set an ambush for me at Kada, they raided us at al-Watir while we slept, and killed us while we were bowing and prostrating. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You are granted aid, Amr bin Salim." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ had not moved when a cloud passed across the sky, and he said, "This cloud is bringing forth the aid of Banu Kaab."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then ordered the people to prepare for the expedition, but concealed his destination from them and asked Allah to keep his news hidden from Quraysh until he could take them by surprise in their own land.
