We came to the Prophet ﷺ after he had conquered Khaybar, and he gave us a share. He did not give a share to anyone who had not witnessed the conquest except for us.
قدمنا على النبي ﷺ بعد أن افتتح خيبر، فقسم لنا، ولم يقسم لأحد لم يشهد الفتح غيرنا.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Military Expeditions (4233) and Muslim in the Book of the Virtues of the Companions (2502:169), both through Burayd bin Abdullah, from Abu Burda, from Ibn Abbas, who said, "He mentioned it." The wording given here is Bukhari's, while Muslim's wording is longer.As for his saying, "He gave no share to anyone who had not witnessed the conquest except us," Abu Musa meant that no share was given to anyone who had not witnessed the battle, without first seeking the consent of those who had taken the spoils, except in the case of the people of the ship. As for Abu Hurairah and his companions, they were given shares only out of the goodwill of the Muslims.Fath al-Bari (7/489).
