Abdullah bin Umar reported,

The Messenger of Allah ﷺ fought the people of Khaybar until he drove them back into their fortress, and he gained control over the land, the crops, and the date palms. They then made peace with him on the terms that they would leave Khaybar with whatever their riding animals could carry, while the gold and silver would belong to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and they would depart from the land. He stipulated that they conceal nothing and hide nothing, and that if they did, no covenant would protect them. They hid a leather bag containing wealth and jewelry belonging to Huyayy bin Akhtab, which he had carried with him to Khaybar when the Banu Nadir were expelled. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to the uncle of Huyayy bin Akhtab, "What happened to Huyayy's bag that he brought with him from Nadir?"He answered, "Expenses and wars consumed it."The Prophet ﷺ said, "The time is too recent, and the wealth is far greater than that."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ handed him over to Zubayr, who tortured him. Before that, the man had entered a ruin, and someone said, "I saw Huyayy circling around a ruin over here." They went and searched, and they found the bag in the ruin. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then killed the two sons of Abu al-Huqayq, one of whom was the husband of Safiya bint Huyayy bin Akhtab. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ took their women and children captive and divided their wealth as spoils because of the treachery they had committed. He intended to expel them from the land. They said, "Muhammad, leave us on this land. We will tend to it and work it." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions had no servants to work the land, and they themselves had no time to attend to it. So he granted them Khaybar on the condition that they would receive half of every crop, every date harvest, and whatever else the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw fit.Abdullah bin Rawaha would come to them every year to estimate the harvest and then assign them their half. One year they complained to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about the severity of his estimate, and they tried to bribe him.He said, "Enemies of Allah, are you trying to feed me what is forbidden? I have come to you from the one most beloved to me, and you are more hateful to me than an equal number of apes and pigs, but my hatred for you and my love for him will not lead me to be unjust toward you."They said, "By this the heavens and the earth are upheld."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ noticed a green mark on Safiya's eye and asked, "What is this green mark on your eye?"She replied, "My head was on the lap of Ibn Abu Huqayq while I was asleep, and I dreamed that a moon fell into my lap. I told him about it, and he slapped me and said, 'Are you wishing for the king of Yathrib?'" She said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was among the most hated people to me, for he had killed my husband, my father, and my brother. But he kept apologizing to me and saying, 'Your father incited the Arabs against me and did such and such,' until that feeling left my heart."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ used to give each of his wives eighty wasqs of dates and twenty wasqs of barley every year. When the time of Umar bin Khattab came, the Jews of Khaybar deceived the Muslims and threw Ibn Umar from the roof of a house. Umar bin Khattab said, "Whoever has a share in Khaybar should come forward so that we may divide it among them." Umar then divided it among them.Their chief said, "Do not expel us. Leave us on it as the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr left us."Umar said to their chief, "Do you think I have forgotten what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to you, 'How will it be with you when your mount carries you toward Syria, day after day?'"Umar then divided it among those of the people of Hudaybiyyah who had been present at Khaybar.
