Salama bin Akwa reported,

Salama reported, "We set out with the Prophet ﷺ for Khaybar, traveling by night. A man from the company said to Amir, 'Amir, won't you let us hear some of your verses?' Amir was a skilled camel-driver, so he dismounted and began chanting to urge the camels along, saying,'O Allah, were it not for You we would not have been guided, nor would we have given charity, nor prayed. So forgive, may we be your ransom, whatever sins we have committed, and make our feet firm should we meet the enemy, and send tranquility down upon us. For when we are called out to, we refuse, and when they shout against us, they rely on hostility against us.'The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, 'Who is this driver?'They replied, 'Amir bin al-Akwa.'He said, 'May Allah have mercy on him.'A man from the company said, 'It is granted, Prophet of Allah. If only you had let us enjoy his company longer.'We came to Khaybar and besieged them until we were struck by severe hunger. Then Allah Most High granted us victory over them. On the evening of the day it was conquered, the people lit many fires. The Prophet ﷺ asked, 'What are these fires? What are you cooking on them?'They said, 'Meat.'He asked, 'What kind of meat?'They said, 'The meat of domestic donkeys.'The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Pour it out and break the pots.'A man said, 'Messenger of Allah, may we pour it out and wash the pots instead?'He replied, 'That will do.'When the armies drew up against each other, Amir's sword was short, and he reached out with it to strike the leg of a Jewish fighter, but the edge of his sword swung back and struck the front of his own knee, and he died from it.When they returned, Salama said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw me and took me by the hand. He asked, 'What is the matter with you?'I said, 'May my father and mother be your ransom. They are claiming that Amir's deeds have been rendered worthless.'The Prophet ﷺ said, 'Whoever says that has lied. He has two rewards,' and he joined two of his fingers together. 'He was one who strove and struggled. Few Arabs have walked the earth like him.'"
