Salamah bin al-Akwa said, I went out before the first call to prayer was made. The milk-camels of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ were grazing at Dhu Qarad.A servant of Abdul-Rahman bin Awf met me and said, "The milk-camels of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ have been seized."I asked, "Who took them?"He replied, "Ghatafan."I let out three cries, "A morning raid! A morning raid! A morning raid!" My voice carried across the two lava plains of Madinah. Then I rushed forward on foot until I caught up with them, just as they had begun drawing water. I started shooting at them with my arrows, for I was a skilled archer, and I would chant, "I am the son of al-Akwa, today is the day the lowly perish."I kept up my rajaz verses until I rescued the milk-camels from them and seized thirty cloaks from them as well. Then the Prophet ﷺ arrived along with the men, and I said, "Prophet of Allah, I have cut the enemy off from the water and they are thirsty. Send a force against them at once."He said, "Son of al-Akwa, you have prevailed, so be gentle."Then we turned back, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mounted me behind him on his she-camel until we entered Madinah.
Bukhari narrated it in Maghazi (4194) and Muslim in jihad (131:1806), both from Qutayba bin Saeed, who said, Hatim bin Ismail narrated to us, from Yazid bin Abu Ubayd, who said, I heard Salama bin Akwa say, then he related it.His statement, "laqah", the singular of which is "laqha", refers to a milk-producing animal that has recently given birth, and their number was twenty. His statement, "fa-asjih", means "be kind and gentle", and "sajaha" means ease, that is, do not deal with them harshly, but rather be gentle.Muhammad bin Ishaq said, "The cry of Ibn Akwa reached the Messenger of Allah , for he had shouted in Madinah, 'The raid! The raid!' The horsemen came racing toward the Messenger of Allah
, and the first of the riders to reach him was Miqdad bin Aswad, then Abbad bin Bishr, Saad bin Zayd, Usayd bin Zuhayr (though there is some doubt about him), Ukasha bin Mihsan, Mihraz bin Nadla, brother of Banu Assad bin Khuzayma, Abu Qatada Harith bin Rubai, brother of Banu Salama, and Abu Ayyash Ubayd bin Zayd bin Samit, brother of Banu Zurayq. He said, when they had gathered around the Messenger of Allah
, he appointed Saad bin Zayd over them, then said, 'Go out in pursuit of the people, and I will join you with more men.'The Prophet
had said to Abu Ayyash, as I have been told by men of Banu Zurayq, 'O Abu Ayyash, if you gave this horse to a man who is a better rider than you, he could catch up with the people.'Abu Ayyash said, I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, I am the best rider among the people.' Then I struck the horse, but by Allah, it had not run fifty cubits with me before it threw me off, and I was amazed at that.Men of Zurayq claimed that the Messenger of Allah
then gave Abu Ayyash's horse to Muaz bin Maas, or Aidh bin Maas bin Qays bin Khalada, who was the eighth. He said, some people count Salama bin Akwa as the eighth."Then Ibn Ishaq said, "When the riders caught up with one another, Abu Qatada killed Habib bin Uyayna and covered him with his cloak, then rejoined the people. The Messenger of Allah
came forward with the Muslims and found Habib covered with Abu Qatada's cloak. The people exclaimed in grief and said, 'Abu Qatada has been killed!' The Messenger of Allah
said, 'This is not Abu Qatada, rather this is the man Abu Qatada killed. He placed his cloak over him so that you would know he was the one who killed him.'He said, Ukasha bin Mihsan caught up with Awbar and his son Amr bin Awbar, who were riding on a single camel, and he pierced them both with his spear, killing them together. They recovered some of the milk camels. He said, the Messenger of Allah
went on until he camped at the mountain of Dhu Qarad, and the people caught up with him there. He stayed there a day and a night.Salama bin Akwa said to him, 'O Messenger of Allah, if you sent me out with a hundred men, I would recover the rest of the herd and seize the necks of these people.'The Messenger of Allah
said, as I have been told, 'They are now drinking their evening milk in Ghatfan.'"See Bidayah wa Nihayah (6/166-169).
