While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was writing the document, Abu Jandal bin Suhayl bin Amr came in chains, having escaped to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.The companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had set out with no doubt that they would conquer Mecca, because of a vision the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had seen. So when they witnessed the truce, the turning back, and the concessions the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had taken upon himself, the people were overwhelmed with such distress that they nearly perished. When Suhayl saw Abu Jandal, he rose toward him, struck him in the face, and said, "Muhammad, the agreement between you and me was finalized before this man came to you."He replied, "You have spoken the truth."Suhayl then seized him by the collar of his garment.Abu Jandal cried out at the top of his voice, "Muslims, will you hand me back to the people of polytheism so they may try to turn me from my religion?"This only added to the people's distress. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Abu Jandal, be patient and seek your reward with Allah, for Allah will surely make a way out and a relief for you and for the oppressed who are with you. We have concluded a peace agreement with these people. We have given them our pledge upon it and they have given us theirs, and we will not break our covenant with them."
Ahmad narrated it (18910) from Yazid bin Harun, who reported to us from Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Yasar, from Zuhri, Muhammad bin Muslim bin Shihab, from Urwa bin Zubayr, from Miswar bin Makhrama and Marwan bin Hakam, who said, and then he related the hadith in full. Ibn Hisham mentioned it in his Sira (2/308), and in it Ibn Ishaq's statement is explicit. This is evidence that the narrators altered the wording of transmission.
