Then the Prophet ﷺ returned to Medina. Abu Baseer, a man from Quraysh who was a Muslim, came to him. The Quraysh sent two men in pursuit of him and said, "Honor the agreement you made with us." So he handed him over to the two men. They set out with him until they reached Dhul-Hulayfah, where they stopped to eat from some dates they had. Abu Baseer said to one of the two men, "By Allah, I see that this sword of yours is excellent."The other drew it out and said, "Yes, by Allah, it is excellent indeed. I have tested it, and tested it again, and tested it."Abu Baseer said, "Show it to me, let me look at it."The man let him take hold of it, and Abu Baseer struck him with it until he lay dead. The other man fled until he reached Medina and rushed into the mosque running. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw him, he said, "This man has seen something terrifying."When the man reached the Prophet ﷺ, he said, "By Allah, my companion has been killed, and I am as good as dead."Then Abu Baseer arrived and said, "Prophet of Allah, by Allah, Allah has fulfilled your obligation. You handed me back to them, then Allah delivered me from them."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Woe to his mother, what a kindler of war he would be, if only he had anyone with him."When Abu Baseer heard this, he understood that the Prophet would send him back to them, so he left and made his way to the seacoast. Then Abu Jandal bin Suhayl escaped from them and joined Abu Baseer. After that, no man from Quraysh who had embraced Islam came out without joining Abu Baseer, until a band of them had gathered. By Allah, they did not hear of any caravan of Quraysh setting out for Syria without intercepting it, killing the men, and seizing their goods. So Quraysh sent word to the Prophet ﷺ, imploring him by Allah and by kinship to send for them, saying that whoever came to him would be safe. The Prophet ﷺ sent for them, and Allah Most High revealed, "And it is He who restrained their hands from you and your hands from them within Mecca after He had given you victory over them..." up to His words "...the zealotry of the time of ignorance" [Fath 48:24–26]. Their zealotry was that they refused to acknowledge him as the Prophet of Allah, refused to write "In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate," and barred them from reaching the House.
