The Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out in the year of Hudaybiyyah intending to visit the House, not seeking battle. He drove with him seventy sacrificial camels, and the people numbered seven hundred men, so each camel was on behalf of ten men.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ traveled until he reached Usfan, where Busr bin Sufyan al-Kabi met him and said, "Messenger of Allah, this is Quraysh. They have heard of your coming and have marched out with their milk-bearing camels and their young, wearing leopard skins, swearing to Allah that you shall never enter upon them by force. Khalid bin Walid is here with their cavalry, advanced as far as Kura al-Ghamim."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Woe to Quraysh! War has consumed them. What harm would it do them if they left me alone with the rest of the Arabs? If the others overcame me, that is what they wanted. And if Allah granted me victory over them, they could enter Islam in their full numbers. If they refused, they could still fight with strength remaining. What does Quraysh think? By Allah, I shall not cease to strive for the cause Allah has sent me with until Allah grants it victory or this neck is severed."Then he ordered the people to take the right-hand path through the saltbush along a route that would bring them out at the pass of al-Marar and Hudaybiyyah, below Mecca. He led the army along that road, and when Quraysh's cavalry saw the dust of the army veering away from their path, they galloped back to Quraysh. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ continued until, when he had entered the pass of al-Marar, his she-camel knelt down. The people said, "She has balked."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "She has not balked, nor is that her nature. Rather, the One who restrained the elephant from Mecca has restrained her. By Allah, Quraysh shall not ask me today for any course in which they appeal to me by ties of kinship without my granting it to them."Then he said to the people, "Dismount."They said, "Messenger of Allah, there is no water in this valley for the people to camp by."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ drew an arrow from his quiver and gave it to one of his companions, who descended into one of those wells and thrust it into the bottom. Water gushed forth until the people drove their camels away from it satisfied. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had settled, Budayl bin Warqa came to him with some men of Khuza, and he said to them as he had said to Busr bin Sufyan. They returned to Quraysh and said, "People of Quraysh, you are being hasty against Muhammad. Muhammad has not come for fighting. He has come only as a visitor to this House, honoring its sanctity."But they suspected them. Muhammad bin Ishaq said that Zuhri said, Khuza were in the confidence of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, both the polytheists and the Muslims among them. They concealed nothing of what was happening at Mecca from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.They said, "Even if he has come only for that, by Allah, he shall never enter upon us by force, and the Arabs shall never speak of that as having happened."Then they sent Mikraz bin Hafs, one of Banu Amir bin Luayy, to him. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw him, he said, "This is a treacherous man." When he reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ spoke to him as he had spoken to his companions. He returned to Quraysh and informed them of what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had said to him. Then they sent al-Hulays bin Alqama al-Kinani, who was at that time the chief of the Ahabish. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ saw him, he said, "This man is from a people who venerate sacrificial offerings, so send the offerings out before him." They sent the offerings out, and when he saw the offerings streaming toward him from the side of the valley, in their garlands, having eaten away their tethers from the long detention from their proper place, he turned back without reaching the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, out of awe at what he saw.He said, "People of Quraysh, I have seen what cannot lawfully be turned back. The sacrificial animals are in their garlands, having eaten away their wool from the long detention from their proper place."They said, "Sit down. You are merely an Arabi with no knowledge."Then they sent Urwa bin Masud al-Thaqafi to him. He said, "People of Quraysh, I have seen the harshness and foul language that those of you whom you send to Muhammad meet with from you when they return to you. You know that you are like a father to me and I am like a son. I heard what had befallen you, so I gathered those of my people who would obey me, then I came to stand by you with my own person."They said, "You speak truly. We hold no suspicion against you."So he set out until he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and sat down before him. He said, "Muhammad, you have gathered a rabble of people, then brought them against your own kin to crush them. Quraysh has come out with their milk-bearing camels and their young, wearing leopard skins, swearing to Allah that you shall never enter upon them by force. By Allah, it is as if I see these people deserting you tomorrow."Abu Bakr was sitting behind the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Suck the clitoris of al-Lat! Are we the ones who would desert him?"Urwa said, "Who is this, Muhammad?"He said, "This is the son of Abu Quhafa."Urwa said, "By Allah, were it not for a favor you once did me which I have not yet repaid, I would answer you. But this one is for that one."Then he reached out for the beard of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Mughira bin Shuba was standing at the head of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in armor, and he struck his hand. Then he said, "Take your hand away from the beard of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ before, by Allah, it never returns to you."Urwa said, "Woe to you! How rough and rude you are!"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ smiled.Urwa asked, "Who is this, Muhammad?"He said, "This is the son of your brother, Mughira bin Shuba."Urwa said, "Treacherous one! Have you not just yesterday washed away your shame?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ spoke to him as he had spoken to his companions and informed him that he had not come seeking war.Urwa rose from before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ having seen what his companions did with him. He performed no ablution but they raced to take its water. He spat no spittle but they raced to it. Not a hair fell from him but they took it.He returned to Quraysh and said, "People of Quraysh, I have visited Khosrau in his kingdom, and I have visited Caesar and the Negus in their kingdoms. By Allah, I have never seen any king among his people like Muhammad among his companions. I have seen a people who will never surrender him for anything. So consider your course."Before that, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had sent Khirash bin Umaya al-Khuzai to Mecca, mounting him on a camel of his called al-Thalab. When he entered Mecca, Quraysh hamstrung the camel and intended to kill Khirash, but the Ahabish prevented them until he came back to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.Then he summoned Umar to send him to Mecca, but Umar said, "Messenger of Allah, I fear Quraysh on my own account, for there is no one of Banu Adi in Mecca to protect me. Quraysh know my hostility toward them and my harshness against them. But I can direct you to a man more honored than I, Uthman bin Affan."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called him and sent him to Quraysh to inform them that he had not come to fight anyone, but had come only as a visitor to this House, honoring its sanctity.Uthman set out until he reached Mecca. Abban bin Saeed bin al-As met him, dismounted from his beast, mounted him in front of him and rode behind him, and gave him protection until he delivered the message of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Uthman went on until he came to Abu Sufyan and the chiefs of Quraysh and conveyed to them what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had sent him with. They said to Uthman, "If you wish to circumambulate the House, then circumambulate it."He said, "I will not do so until the Messenger of Allah ﷺ circumambulates it."So Quraysh detained him with them, and word reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ that Uthman had been killed.Muhammad said, Zuhri narrated to me that Quraysh sent Suhayl bin Amr and said, "Go to Muhammad and make peace with him, but let nothing be in his peace except that he turn back from us this year. By Allah, the Arabs shall never speak of his having entered upon us by force."Suhayl came to him, and when the Prophet ﷺ saw him, he said, "The people have wanted peace, since they have sent this man." When he reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, the two spoke at length and went back and forth until peace was concluded between them. When the matter had been settled and nothing remained but the writing of the document, Umar bin Khattab leapt up and went to Abu Bakr and said, "Abu Bakr, is he not the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?"He said, "Yes."Umar said, "Are we not the Muslims?"He said, "Yes."Umar said, "Are they not the polytheists?"He said, "Yes."Umar said, "Then why do we accept this humiliation in our religion?"Abu Bakr said, "Umar, hold fast to his stirrup wherever he goes, for I bear witness that he is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."Umar said, "And I bear witness as well."Then he came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Messenger of Allah, are we not the Muslims and they not the polytheists?"He said, "Yes."Umar said, "Then why do we accept this humiliation in our religion?"He said, "I am the servant of Allah and His Messenger. I shall not disobey His command, and He shall not let me down."Umar later said, "I never ceased fasting, praying, giving charity, and freeing slaves on account of what I did, fearing the words I had spoken that day, until I hoped that it might turn to good."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called Ali bin Abu Talib and said, "Write, In the name of the Most Merciful, the Compassionate."Suhayl bin Amr said, "I do not know this. Rather, write, In Your name, O Allah."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Write, In Your name, O Allah. This is what Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, has agreed upon with Suhayl bin Amr."Suhayl said, "Had I borne witness that you are the Messenger of Allah, I would not have fought you. But write, This is what Muhammad bin Abdullah and Suhayl bin Amr have agreed upon, to lay down war for ten years, during which the people shall be safe and refrain from one another, on the condition that whoever comes to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from among Suhayl's people without the permission of his guardian shall be returned to them, and whoever from those with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ comes to Quraysh shall not be returned. Between us shall be a sealed compact, and there shall be no theft and no treachery."Among their stipulations when they wrote the document was that whoever wished to enter into Muhammad's covenant and pact could enter it, and whoever wished to enter into Quraysh's covenant and pact could enter it. Khuza leapt up and said, "We are in the covenant and pact of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ." Banu Bakr leapt up and said, "We are in the covenant and pact of Quraysh." And, "You shall turn back from us this year and not enter upon us in Mecca, and when next year comes, we shall withdraw from it for you and you may enter it with your companions and stay among them three days. With you shall be the weapons of a rider only. You shall not enter it with anything but swords in their sheaths."While the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was writing the document, Abu Jandal bin Suhayl bin Amr came in chains, having escaped to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had set out without doubting victory because of a vision the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had seen. When they saw what they saw of peace and turning back, and what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had taken upon himself, a great matter entered the people, until they almost perished. When Suhayl saw Abu Jandal, he stood up to him and struck his face and said, "Muhammad, the agreement between me and you was concluded before this one came to you."He said, "You speak truly." Then he went to him and seized him by the collar.Abu Jandal cried out at the top of his voice, "Muslims, will you return me to the people of polytheism, that they tempt me away from my religion?"This increased the people's distress upon what they were already suffering. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Abu Jandal, be patient and seek your reward, for Allah will make for you and for those with you among the oppressed a relief and a way out. We have concluded peace with these people, given them our word on it, and they have given us theirs. We shall not betray them."Umar bin Khattab leapt up and walked alongside Abu Jandal, saying, "Be patient, Abu Jandal. They are only polytheists, and the blood of any one of them is the blood of a dog." He drew the hilt of the sword close to him. Umar said, "I hoped he would take the sword and strike his father with it." But the man held back from harming his father. The matter was carried out. When they had finished the document, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was praying within the sacred precinct and was encamped in the profane area. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stood and said, "People, sacrifice and shave."But not a single man stood up. Then he repeated it, and not a man stood up. Then he repeated it again, and not a man stood up.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned and went in to Umm Salama and said, "Umm Salama, what is the matter with the people?"She said, "Messenger of Allah, what you have seen has entered them. Do not speak to any of them. Go to your sacrificial animal wherever it is and slaughter it, and shave. If you do that, the people will do likewise."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out, speaking to no one, until he came to his sacrificial animal and slaughtered it. Then he sat down and was shaved. The people stood up and began sacrificing and shaving. When he was midway between Mecca and Medina on the road, Surat al-Fath was revealed.
Imam Ahmad narrated it (18910) from Yazid bin Harun, who said, Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Yasar informed us, from Zuhri Muhammad bin Muslim bin Shihab, from Urwa bin Zubayr, from Miswar bin Makhrama and Marwan bin Hakam, who both said, and they mentioned it.Its isnad is hasan because of Muhammad bin Ishaq. Ibn Hisham mentioned it in his Sirah (2/308) using the wording "he related," just as Bukhari had already reported it through the route of Maamar, from Zuhri, corroborating Muhammad bin Ishaq in some of its meanings. However, there is some question regarding certain passages in Ibn Ishaq's hadith, among them his statement, "the people numbered seven hundred," as was explained shortly before.
