The Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out during the time of Hudaybiyah. When they had traveled part of the way, the Prophet ﷺ said, "Khalid bin Walid is at al-Ghamim with a cavalry advance party of Quraysh. Take the route to the right."By Allah, Khalid was not aware of them until he suddenly saw the dust raised by the army, then he rode off at full speed to warn Quraysh. The Prophet ﷺ continued until, when he reached the mountain pass through which one descends upon them, his she-camel knelt down. The people said, "Hal, hal!" urging her on, but she refused to budge. They said, "al-Qaswa has become stubborn."The Prophet ﷺ said, "al-Qaswa has not become stubborn, that is not her nature. Rather, the One who restrained the elephant has restrained her." Then he said, "By the One in whose hand is my soul, they will not ask me for any arrangement in which they magnify the sanctities of Allah except that I will grant it to them."Then he urged her on and she sprang up. He turned aside from them and stopped at the far end of Hudaybiyah at a small water-hole containing little water, which the people drew from in tiny amounts. It was not long before the people exhausted it, then the thirst was complained of to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He drew an arrow from his quiver and ordered them to place it in the well. By Allah, the water kept gushing forth and quenching their thirst until they all departed satisfied. While they were in this state, Budayl bin Warqa al-Khuzai came with a group of his people from Khuza, and they were the trusted advisors of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from the people of Tihamah. He said, "I have left Kaab bin Luayy and Amir bin Luayy camped at the springs of Hudaybiyah with their milch-camels and their young, and they intend to fight you and bar you from the House."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "We have not come to fight anyone. We have come to perform Umrah. War has worn down Quraysh and harmed them. If they wish, I will grant them a truce for a period and let them stay out of my way with the people. If I prevail, then if they wish, they may enter into what the people have entered into. If not, they will at least have rested. But if they refuse, by the One in whose hand is my soul, I will fight them over this affair of mine until my neck is severed, and Allah's command will surely come to pass."Budayl said, "I will convey to them what you say." So he set off until he came to Quraysh and said, "We have come to you from this man, and we heard him say something. If you wish us to relate it to you, we will do so."The foolish among them said, "We have no need for you to tell us anything about him."But those of sound judgment among them said, "Tell us what you heard him say."He said, "I heard him say such and such," and he related to them what the Prophet ﷺ had said. Then Urwa bin Masud stood up and said, "My people, am I not like a father to you?"They said, "Yes."He said, "And are you not like my children?"They said, "Yes."He said, "Do you suspect me of anything?"They said, "No."He said, "Do you not know that I called upon the people of Ukaz to mobilize, and when they refused me, I came to you with my family, my children, and those who obeyed me?"They said, "Yes."He said, "This man has offered you a course of right guidance. Accept it, and let me go to him."They said, "Go to him."So he went to him and began speaking with the Prophet ﷺ, and the Prophet ﷺ said something similar to what he had said to Budayl. At that point Urwa said, "Muhammad, tell me, if you wipe out the affair of your people, have you ever heard of any of the Arabs who destroyed his own kin before you? But if it goes the other way, by Allah, I see no faces of distinction here. I only see a mixed rabble of people likely to flee and abandon you."Abu Bakr said to him, "Suck the clitoris of al-Lat! Would we flee and abandon him?"He said, "Who is this?"They said, "Abu Bakr."He said, "By the One in whose hand is my soul, were it not for a favor you did me which I have not yet repaid, I would have answered you in kind."Then he resumed speaking with the Prophet ﷺ, and every time he spoke he would take hold of his beard. Mughira bin Shuba was standing at the head of the Prophet ﷺ holding a sword and wearing a helmet. Every time Urwa reached toward the beard of the Prophet ﷺ, Mughira would strike his hand with the hilt of the sword and say to him, "Take your hand away from the beard of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ."Urwa raised his head and said, "Who is this?"They said, "Mughira bin Shuba."He said, "You treacherous one, am I not still trying to settle the consequences of your treachery?"Mughira had accompanied some people in the time of Jahiliyyah, then killed them and taken their wealth, then he came and embraced Islam. The Prophet ﷺ had said, "As for the Islam, I accept it. As for the wealth, I have nothing to do with it."Then Urwa began to observe the companions of the Prophet ﷺ with his eyes. By Allah, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not spit but that it landed in the palm of one of them, who would then rub it on his face and skin. When he commanded them, they raced to carry out his command. When he performed ablution, they nearly came to blows over the water he used. When he spoke, they lowered their voices in his presence. They would not stare at him out of reverence for him.Urwa returned to his companions and said, "My people, by Allah, I have visited kings. I have visited Caesar, Chosroes, and the Negus. By Allah, I have never seen a king whose companions revere him as the companions of Muhammad ﷺ revere Muhammad. By Allah, he does not spit but that it lands in the palm of one of them, who then rubs it on his face and skin. When he commands them, they race to carry out his command. When he performs ablution, they nearly come to blows over his ablution water. When he speaks, they lower their voices in his presence. They do not stare at him out of reverence for him. He has offered you a course of right guidance, so accept it."A man from Banu Kinanah said, "Let me go to him."They said, "Go to him."When he came in sight of the Prophet ﷺ and his companions, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "This is so-and-so. He is from a people who venerate the sacrificial animals, so send them out for him."So they were sent out for him, and the people received him reciting the talbiyah. When he saw that, he said, "Glory be to Allah! It is not right that these people should be barred from the House."When he returned to his companions he said, "I saw the sacrificial animals garlanded and marked. I do not think they should be barred from the House."A man among them named Mikraz bin Hafs stood up and said, "Let me go to him."They said, "Go to him."When he came in sight of them, the Prophet ﷺ said, "This is Mikraz, and he is a treacherous man."He began speaking with the Prophet ﷺ, and while he was speaking with him, Suhayl bin Amr arrived.Muamar said, Ayub informed me from Ikrima that when Suhayl bin Amr came, the Prophet ﷺ said, "Your affair has now been made easy for you."Muamar said, Zuhri said in his narration, Suhayl bin Amr came and said, "Come, let us write a treaty between us and you."The Prophet ﷺ called the scribe and said, "Write, In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate."Suhayl said, "As for ar-Rahman, by Allah I do not know what that is. Rather, write, In your name, O Allah, as you used to write."The Muslims said, "By Allah, we will not write it except as, In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Write, In your name, O Allah."Then he said, "This is what Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah, has agreed upon."Suhayl said, "By Allah, if we knew you were the Messenger of Allah we would not have barred you from the House nor fought you. Rather, write, Muhammad bin Abdullah."The Prophet ﷺ said, "By Allah, I am indeed the Messenger of Allah, even if you deny me. Write, Muhammad bin Abdullah."Zuhri said, That was because of his statement, "They will not ask me for any arrangement in which they magnify the sanctities of Allah except that I will grant it to them."The Prophet ﷺ said to him, "On the condition that you allow us access to the House so we may circumambulate it."
Bukhari reported it in "Conditions" (2731, 2732, 2733), from Abdullah bin Muhammad, who said, Abdul-Razzaq narrated to us, Mamar informed us, he said, Zuhri informed me, he said, Urwa bin Zubayr informed me, from Miswar bin Makhrama and Marwan, each of them confirming the other's account, they said, and then they related the hadith.
