The people grew thirsty on the day of Hudaybiyah. In front of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was a small leather water vessel from which he performed his ablution. Then the people came toward him.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "What is the matter with you?"They replied, "Messenger of Allah, we have no water to perform ablution with or to drink except what is in your vessel."So the Prophet ﷺ placed his hand inside the vessel, and water began to gush from between his fingers like springs. We drank and performed ablution from it.I asked Jabir, "How many were you that day?"He replied, "Even if we had been a hundred thousand, it would have sufficed us. We were fifteen hundred."
عطش الناس يوم الحديبية، ورسول الله ﷺ بين يديه ركوة فتوضأ منها، ثم أقبل الناس نحوه، فقال رسول الله ﷺ: ما لكم؟ قالوا: يا رسول الله ليس عندنا ماء نتوضأ به ولا نشرب إلا ما في ركوتك، قال: فوضع النبي ﷺ يده في الركوة فجعل الماء يفور من بين أصابعه كأمثال العيون، قال: فشربنا وتوضأنا، فقلت لجابر: كم كنتم يومئذ؟ قال: لو كنا مائة ألف لكفانا، كنا خمس عشرة مائة.
Bukhari narrated it in Kitab al-Maghazi (4152) and Muslim in Kitab al-Imarah (73:1856), both of them through Husayn (that is, Ibn Abdul-Rahman), from Salim bin Abu Jaad, from Jabir, as mentioned above.As for what was narrated from Jundab bin Najiya, or Najiya bin Jundab, who said, "When we were at Ghamim, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ received news that Quraysh had sent out Khalid bin Walid with a detachment of cavalry to intercept the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ disliked the idea of meeting him, being merciful toward his people, so he said, 'Who will guide us off this road?' I said, 'I will, may my father be sacrificed for you.' So I took a route that passed through rough terrain, hollows, and steep passes, until the ground leveled out for us and I brought him down at Hudaybiya, where the well was dry. He threw an arrow, or one of his arrows, from his quiver into it, then spat into it, then prayed, and its springs gushed forth, so much so that I say, or you say, 'Had we wished, we could have scooped the water up with our own hands.'"This is daif. Tabarani narrated it in al-Kabir (2/193-194) from Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Shuayb Rajani, who said, our teacher Muhammad bin Muamar Bahrani told us, from Ubaydullah bin Musa, from Musa bin Ubayda, from Abdullah, an elder from Aslam, from Jundab bin Najiya or Najiya bin Jundab, who said what was mentioned above.Hasan bin Sufyan narrated it in his Musnad through Musa bin Ubayda, from the hadith of Najiya bin Jundab, without the doubt. Ibn Hajar mentioned it in al-Isabah (19/11), attributing it to Tabarani's narration as it appears there with the doubt. Abdullah, the elder from Aslam, is Abdullah bin Amr bin Aslam. He said, "Musa is daif," and Haythami likewise faulted it on this basis in al-Majmu (6/144).A note of caution, in the copy of Tabarani's text it appears as "Ubaydullah bin Musa bin Ubayda, from Abdullah, an elder from Aslam," which is a printing error.And in the Maghazi of Abu Aswad, from Urwa, "He performed wudu in the bucket, rinsed his mouth with water, then spat it back into it, and ordered that it be poured into the well, and he drew an arrow from his quiver and threw it into the well, and prayed to Allah."
