The Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed over the slain of Uhud after eight years, as one bidding farewell to the living and the dead. Then he ascended the pulpit and said, "I am your forerunner, and I am a witness over you..." The hadith continues at length.
صلى رسول الله ﷺ على قتلى أحد بعد ثماني سنين كالمودع للأحياء والأموات، ثم طلع المنبر فقال: إني بين أيديكم فرط، وأنا عليكم شهيد… الحديث بطوله
Bukhari narrated it in "Al-Maghazi" (4042) and Muslim in "Al-Fadail" (30:2296), both by way of Yazid bin Abu Habib, from Abu Khayr, from Uqba bin Amir, who said, and then he related it.As for what was narrated from Jabir, who said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, when the companions of Uhud were mentioned, 'By Allah, I would have loved to have been left behind with the companions at the base of the mountain,'" meaning the foot of the mountain, this is a munkar report. Ahmad narrated it (15025), as did Hakim (2/76, 3/28), and from him Bayhaqi in "Ad-Dalail" (3/304), by way of a chain from Ibn Ishaq, who said, Asim bin Umar bin Qatada narrated to me, from Abdul-Rahman bin Jabir, from Jabir, and then he related it. Hakim said, sahih according to the standard of Muslim.Haythami mentioned it in "Al-Majma" (6/123) and said, Ahmad narrated it, and its narrators are the narrators of sahih works except for Ibn Ishaq, who has explicitly stated that he heard it directly.I say, it is as he said, except that Abdul-Rahman bin Jabir Al-Ansari, although he is among the narrators of the sahih works, and Ajli and Nasai deemed him trustworthy, Ibn Saad said regarding his narration and that of his brother, "Daif, and they are not to be relied upon as evidence."Moreover, there is something objectionable in its wording, namely, how could the Prophet ﷺ wish to be among those killed at Uhud when he was supplicating Allah saying, "O Allah, if You wish, You will not be worshipped on earth," as Muslim narrated. And Allah Almighty said, "He is the One who sent His Messenger with guidance and the religion of truth, that He may make it prevail over all religion, even though the polytheists dislike it" [Tawba 9:33].Bayhaqi has also transmitted the statement of Asim bin Umar bin Qatada, "But by Allah, it would not please me that he had been left behind with them." The meaning of "left behind" (ghudira) is "left among the slain." As for the general wish to be killed, then brought back to life, then killed again, then brought back to life, and so on, that is a different matter from this. His statement "nahs al-jabal," with a damma on the nun, means the base of the mountain and its foot.
