On the day of Uhud, the polytheists were routed. Then Iblis, may Allah's curse be upon him, cried out, "Servants of Allah, watch your rear!" So the front ranks turned back and clashed with those at the rear.Hudhayfa caught sight of the scene and saw his father, al-Yaman, among them. He shouted, "Servants of Allah, my father, my father!"She said, "By Allah, they did not stop until they had killed him."Hudhayfa said, "May Allah forgive you."Urwa said, "By Allah, a trace of goodness never ceased to remain in Hudhayfa until he met Allah.""Basurtu" means "I came to know through insight into the matter," while "absartu" comes from sight of the eye. It is also said that basurtu and absartu mean the same thing.
Bukhari reported it in Maghazi (4065), from Ubaydullah bin Saeed, who said, Abu Usama narrated to us, from Hisham bin Urwa, from his father, from Ayesha, and mentioned it. Huzaifa's kunya is Abu Abdullah, and his father Yaman's name was Husayl bin Jabir. Yaman was a nickname, and he was called Yaman because he was traced back to his grandfather Yaman bin Harith bin Qutayah. Yaman's actual name was Jarwa bin Harith bin Qutayah. Jarwa was called Yaman because he had shed blood among his people, so he fled to Madinah and formed an alliance with Banu Abdul-Ashhal. His people then called him Yaman because of his alliance with the Yamanis. He and his two sons, Huzaifa and Safwan, were present with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ at Uhud. During the battle, the Muslims struck Husayl and killed him, thinking he was one of the polytheists, not realizing who he was, while Huzaifa was crying out, "My father, my father," but was not heard. His son Huzaifa then gave up the blood money owed to him by those who had struck him. It is also said that the one who killed him was Utba bin Masud. This is a summary of what is in al-Istiab.Muhammad bin Ishaq recorded an account of his killing with a connected chain, saying, Asim bin Umar bin Qatada narrated to me, from Mahmud bin Labeed, who said, When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out for Uhud, Husayl bin Jabir, who was Yaman, the father of Huzaifa bin Yaman, and Thabit bin Waqsh were placed in the fortified towers along with the women and children. One of them, two elderly men, said to the other, "What is wrong with you? What are you waiting for? By Allah, neither of us has left of his life more than the thirst-span of a donkey. We are nothing but corpses today or tomorrow. Why don't we take up our swords and go join the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, so that perhaps Allah will grant us martyrdom alongside the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?" So they took up their swords and went out, joining the ranks of the fighters without anyone knowing they had come. As for Thabit bin Waqsh, the polytheists killed him. As for Husayl bin Jabir, the swords of the Muslims struck him from every side and killed him without recognizing him. Huzaifa said, "My father," and they said, "By Allah, we did not recognize him," and they spoke the truth. Huzaifa said, "May Allah forgive you, for He is the Most Merciful of the merciful." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ wished to pay his blood money, but Huzaifa gave it up as charity to the Muslims, which increased his standing with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in goodness. This account ends here. Sirat bin Hisham (2/87).Mahmud bin Labeed al-Awsi al-Ashhali was among the younger companions, having seen the Prophet, and most of his narrations come from the companions. As for Huzaifa, he was among the senior companions of the Prophet ﷺ and was known among the companions as the keeper of the secret of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Umar used to watch him whenever anyone among the companions died, for if Huzaifa did not attend a funeral, Umar would not attend it either. He died in the year thirty-six, after the killing of Uthman, at the beginning of Ali's caliphate.
