The Messenger of Allah ﷺ dispatched a group of men from the Ansar to Abu Rafi the Jew, and he placed Abdullah bin Ateek in command over them. Abu Rafi used to harm the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and assist others against him. He lived in a fortress in the land of Hijaz. When they drew near to him, the sun had set and people were returning home with their grazing livestock.Abdullah said to his companions, "Stay where you are. I will go ahead and try to slip past the gatekeeper, hoping I can get inside."He went forward until he came close to the gate, then wrapped himself in his garment as though he were relieving himself. The people had already entered. The gatekeeper called out to him, "Servant of Allah, if you want to come in, come in now, for I want to lock the gate."Abdullah continued, "So I went in and hid. Once everyone had entered, he locked the gate and hung the keys on a peg. I got up, took the keys, and unlocked the gate. Abu Rafi used to stay up late in conversation, and he was in an upper chamber of his. When his evening companions had left him, I climbed up to him. Each time I opened a door I locked it behind me from the inside, telling myself, 'If the people become aware of me, they will not reach me before I have killed him.'I came up to him, and he was in a dark room surrounded by his family, and I could not tell where in the room he was. I said, 'Abu Rafi.'He said, 'Who is this?'I lunged toward the voice and struck him a blow with my sword, but I was flustered, so it had no effect. He cried out, and I left the room and waited a short distance away. Then I went back in and said, 'What is this noise, Abu Rafi?'He said, 'May your mother be bereaved! A man in the house struck me just now with a sword.'So I struck him a blow that wounded him severely but did not kill him. Then I placed the point of the sword on his belly and pressed until it came out through his back, and I knew I had killed him. I began opening the doors one by one until I reached a staircase. I put my foot down, thinking I had reached the ground, and fell. It was a moonlit night, and I broke my leg. I bound it with my turban, then walked on and sat down by the gate.I said to myself, 'I will not leave tonight until I know whether I have killed him.' When the rooster crowed, the announcer of the dead stood on the wall and said, 'I announce the death of Abu Rafi, merchant of the people of Hijaz.'I went off to my companions and said, 'Let us hurry away! Allah has killed Abu Rafi.' I came to the Prophet ﷺ and told him what had happened. He said, 'Stretch out your leg.'I stretched out my leg, and he wiped it, and it was as though it had never hurt at all."
Bukhari related it in the Book of Military Expeditions (4039) from Yusuf bin Musa, who said, Ubaydullah bin Musa related to us, from Israil, from Abu Ishaq, from Bara, who mentioned it.Ibn Ishaq said, when the affair of the Trench and the matter of Banu Qurayza had come to an end, and given that Sallam bin Abu Huqayq, who was Abu Rafi, was among those who had rallied the confederate tribes against the Messenger of Allah, and given that the Aws had already killed Kaab bin Ashraf before the Battle of Uhud on account of his enmity toward the Messenger of Allah and his incitement against him, the Khazraj sought the permission of the Messenger of Allah to kill Sallam bin Abu Huqayq, who was in Khaybar. He said, so five men from the Khazraj, from Banu Salama, set out toward him, Abdullah bin Utayk, Masud bin Sinan, Abdullah bin Unays, Abu Qatada Harith bin Rubai, and Khuzai bin Aswad, an ally of theirs from Aslam. They set out, and the Messenger of Allah appointed Abdullah bin Utayk as their leader, and he forbade them from killing any child or woman.Sirat bin Hisham (2/273–274).
