When all the polytheists had returned to Makkah, Umayr bin Wahb came and sat with Safwan bin Umaya in the Hijr.Safwan said, "May Allah make life wretched after those slain at Badr."Umayr replied, "Indeed, by Allah, there is no good in life after them. Were it not for a debt I owe with no means to pay it, and dependents I cannot leave with nothing, I would ride to Muhammad and kill him if I could only get close enough to him. I have an excuse I can use with him. I would say I had come on account of my son who is a captive there."Safwan was delighted and said to him, "Your debt is on me, and your dependents will share with my own in maintenance. Nothing I have shall be withheld from them, and I will not fall short in caring for them."They agreed on the matter. Safwan provided his mount and equipped him, and he ordered Umayr's sword to be polished and poisoned.Umayr said to Safwan, "Keep my mission secret for several days."Umayr arrived in Madinah, halted at the door of the masjid, hobbled his mount, took up his sword, and made his way toward the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.Umar saw him while he was sitting with a group of the Ansar and was alarmed. He went in to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "Prophet of Allah, do not trust him with anything."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Bring him in to me."Umar went out and ordered his companions to go in to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and stay on guard against Umayr. Then Umar and Umayr came forward until they entered upon the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and Umayr had his sword with him.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to Umar, "Step back from him."When Umayr drew near, he said, "Good morning to you," which was the greeting of the people of the Jahiliyya. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Allah has honored us above your greeting and has given us a greeting that is the greeting of the people of Paradise, which is salam."Umayr said, "Your acquaintance with it is recent."The Prophet ﷺ asked him, "What has brought you here, Umayr?"He replied, "I have come about my captive whom you hold. Treat us well in regard to our captives, for you are our kin and our people."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "What is the reason for the sword around your neck?"He answered, "May Allah disgrace these swords. Did they avail us anything? I simply forgot it on my neck when I dismounted."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Tell me the truth. What has brought you here?"He said, "I came only seeking my captive."The Prophet ﷺ said, "What did you stipulate with Safwan in the Hijr?"Umayr was struck with fear and said, "What did I stipulate with him?"The Prophet ﷺ said, "You undertook to kill me on condition that he would maintain your children and pay your debt, but Allah stands between you and that."Umayr said, "I bear witness that you are the Messenger of Allah, and I bear witness that there is no god but Allah. We used to deny you, Messenger of Allah, regarding the revelation and what came to you from heaven. This conversation between me and Safwan in the Hijr was just as you said, and no one was aware of it. Allah has informed you of it. Praise be to Allah who has guided me to this path."The Muslims rejoiced over him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, "Sit, Umayr, that we may keep your company."He said to his companions, "Teach your brother the Quran," and he released his captive to him.Umayr said, "Messenger of Allah, give me leave to return to Quraysh, that I may call them to Allah and to Islam. Perhaps Allah will guide them."He gave him permission, and Umayr set out for Makkah.Meanwhile, Safwan was telling the Quraysh, "Rejoice at news of a victory that will make you forget the day of Badr." He kept asking every rider arriving from Madinah, "Is there any news from there?" until a man came to him and said, "Umayr has accepted Islam." The polytheists cursed him.Safwan said, "I swear by Allah I will never speak to him again, nor will I benefit him with anything."Then Umayr arrived and called them to Islam and counseled them with all his effort, and through him many people accepted Islam.
Musa bin Uqba narrated it in his Maghazi from Ibn Shihab in this manner as a mursal narration, as found in Isabah (7/531–533). Tabarani narrated it in Al-Kabir (17/62) via the route of Muhammad bin Sahl bin Askar, from Abdul-Razzaq, who said, Jafar bin Sulayman narrated to us, from Abu Imran Jawni, "I do not know it except from Anas bin Malik," and he mentioned it similarly but in abbreviated form.Ibn Manda narrated it via the route of Abu Azhar, from Abdul-Razzaq with his chain, and said, "It is gharib, we do not know it from Abu Imran except by this route," just as the Hafiz said in Isabah, then he pointed to Tabarani's narration.I say, this story of Umayr has been narrated through other routes, some of them mursal, which Tabarani and Abu Naeem recorded in Marifat Sahabah (3/470), and they strengthen one another due to the difference in their sources and the reliability of their narrators. The Hafiz acknowledged that it is mawsul (connected) in Isabah after presenting its mursal versions.
