The Prophet ﷺ left Uthman bin Affan and Usama bin Zayd behind to look after Ruqayyah, the daughter of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, during the days of Badr. Then Zayd bin Haritha arrived on Adba, the she-camel of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, bearing the good news of victory.Usama said, "I heard the commotion, so I went out, and there was Zayd having come with the good news. By Allah, I did not believe it until I saw the captives." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ then allotted Uthman his share of the spoils.
أن النبي ﷺ خلف عثمان بن عفان وأسامة بن زيد على رقية بنت رسول الله ﷺ أيام بدر، فجاء زيد بن حارثة على العضباء ناقة رسول الله ﷺ بالبشارة. قال أسامة: فسمعت الهيعة، فخرجت فإذا زيد قد جاء بالبشارة، فوالله ماصدقت حتى رأيت الأسارى، فضرب رسول الله ﷺ العثمان بسهمه.

Bayhaqi narrated it in Dalail (3/130) from Abu Hasan Muqri, who said, Hasan bin Muhammad bin Ishaq told us, who said, Yusuf bin Yaqub told us, who said, Muhammad bin Abu Bakr told us, who said, Amr bin Asim told us, who said, Hammad bin Salama told us, from Hisham bin Urwa, from his father, from Usama bin Zayd, and he related it. Its isnad is sahih.Al-hayah means a cry of alarm.Among those brought from the captives of Badr to Madinah was Suhayl bin Amr. It is narrated from Yahya bin Abdullah bin Abdul-Rahman bin Asaad bin Zurara, who said, the captives were brought when they arrived in Madinah, and Sawda bint Zama, wife of the Prophet ﷺ, was with the family of Afra, mourning for Awf and Muawwidh, the two sons of Afra, and that was before the veil was imposed on them.Sawda said, "By Allah, I was with them when it was said, 'Here are the captives who have been brought.' So I returned to my house, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in it. There was Abu Yazid Suhayl bin Amr in a corner of the room, his hands bound together to his neck with a rope. By Allah, when I saw Abu Yazid like that, I could not help saying, 'O Abu Yazid, you surrendered yourselves. Would you not rather have died with honor?' I had only just finished when I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say from inside the house, 'O Sawda, against Allah and His Messenger?' So I said, 'O Messenger of Allah, by Him who sent you with the truth, when I saw Abu Yazid with his hands bound to his neck with the rope, I could not help saying what I said.'"However, this is mursal.Abu Dawud (2680) and Bayhaqi (9/89) both narrated it through the hadith of Ibn Ishaq, who said, Abdullah bin Abu Bakr told me, from Yahya bin Abdullah bin Abdul-Rahman bin Asaad bin Zurara, and he related it, though Abu Dawud did not give its full wording. Yahya bin Abdullah bin Abdul-Rahman bin Asaad bin Zurara is a successor, and he is the one narrating the story, so it is among his mursal reports.However, Hakim narrated it (3/22) through the route of Ahmad bin Abdul-Jabbar, Yunus bin Bukayr told us, from Ibn Ishaq, who said, Abdullah bin Abu Bakr told me, from Yahya bin Abdullah bin Abdul-Rahman bin Asaad bin Zurara, adding in it "from his grandfather." Ibn Hajar likewise mentioned it from Hakim in Ithaf Mahra (4/10, 468). If this addition is confirmed to be sound, then it is also mursal, because there is no companion among the Companions named Abdul-Rahman bin Asaad bin Zurara.
