Dahhak bin Qays intended to appoint Masruq to a position, but Umarah bin Uqba said to him, "Are you appointing a man who was among those remaining who killed Uthman?"Masruq replied to him, "Abdullah bin Masud, whose narrations we held to be trustworthy, told us that when the Prophet ﷺ was about to have your father executed, your father asked, 'Who will care for my children?' The Prophet ﷺ answered, 'The Fire.' So I am content for you with what the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was content with for you."
Abu Dawud (2686) and Hakim (2/124) both narrated it from the hadith of Abdullah bin Jafar Raqqi, who said, Ubaydullah bin Amr told me, from Zayd bin Abu Unaysa, from Amr bin Mura, from Ibrahim, who mentioned it. Its chain of transmission is sahih. Hakim said, "Sahih according to the criteria of both of them."
