Abdul-Rahman bin Awf reported,

Abdul-Rahman bin Awf said, "I made a written agreement with Umaya bin Khalaf that he would protect my dependents and property in Mecca and I would protect his in Medina. When I wrote 'al-Rahman,' he said, 'I do not know al-Rahman. Write my name as you were known in the days of ignorance.' So I wrote it as Abd Amr.On the day of Badr, I went out to a hill to take him there for safekeeping while the people were asleep, but Bilal saw him. Bilal went out until he stood before a gathering of the Ansar and said, 'Umaya bin Khalaf! May I not be saved if Umaya is saved!' A group of the Ansar set out with him, following our tracks. When I feared they would overtake us, I left his son behind to occupy them, but they killed him and still refused to turn back, continuing their pursuit of us. Umaya was a heavy man. When they caught up with us, I said to him, 'Kneel down,' and he knelt. I threw myself over him to shield him, but they reached him with their swords from beneath me until they killed him. One of them struck my foot with his sword."Abdul-Rahman bin Awf used to show us that scar on the top of his foot.
