When we arrived in Medina, we ate from its fruits but they did not agree with us, and we were struck with fever. The Prophet ﷺ was gathering intelligence about Badr, and when news reached us that the polytheists were advancing, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ set out for Badr. Badr is a well, and we reached it before the polytheists did. There we found two of their men, one from Quraysh and a freed slave belonging to Uqba bin Abu Muayt. The Qurayshi escaped, but we captured the freed slave of Uqba.We began asking him, "How many are the people?"He would reply, "By Allah, they are many in number and fierce in might."Whenever he said this, the Muslims would strike him, until they brought him to the Prophet ﷺ, who asked him, "How many are the people?"He said, "By Allah, they are many in number and fierce in might."The Prophet ﷺ pressed him to tell him how many they were, but he refused. Then the Prophet ﷺ asked him, "How many camels do they slaughter each day?"He said, "Ten each day."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "The people are a thousand. Each camel feeds a hundred, along with their followers."Then during the night a light rain fell on us, and we went beneath the trees and the shields to take shelter from the rain. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ spent the night calling upon his Lord , saying, "O Allah, if You destroy this band, You will not be worshipped."When dawn broke, he called out, "Prayer, servants of Allah!" The people came from beneath the trees and the shields, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ led us in prayer and urged us on to fight. Then he said, "The gathering of Quraysh is beneath that red rocky slope of the mountain."When the enemy drew near and we lined up facing them, there was a man among them riding a red camel, moving about among the people. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Ali, call Hamza for me," for he was the closest of us to the polytheists, "and ask who is the man on the red camel and what is he saying to them?"Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "If there is anyone among the people who commands good, it may well be the man on the red camel."Hamza came back and said, "It is Utba bin Rabia. He is forbidding them from fighting and saying to them, 'My people, I see a people who are determined to die. You will not reach them while there is any good left in you. My people, lay this matter on my head today and say Utba bin Rabia turned coward. You know I am not the most cowardly among you.'"Abu Jahl heard this and said, "You say this? By Allah, if anyone other than you said this, I would have made him bite his own flesh. Your lungs have filled your chest with terror."Utba said, "You taunt me, you yellow-bottomed one? Today you will know which of us is the coward."So Utba came forward, along with his brother Shayba and his son Walid, in fury, and they called out, "Who will come forth to single combat?"Six young men from the Ansar came out, but Utba said, "We do not want these. Let our cousins from Banu Abdul-Muttalib come out to fight us."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Stand up, Ali. Stand up, Hamza. Stand up, Ubayda bin Harith bin Muttalib."Allah Most High killed Utba and Shayba, the two sons of Rabia, and Walid bin Utba, and Ubayda was wounded. We killed seventy of them and captured seventy.A short man from the Ansar came leading Abbas bin Abdul-Muttalib as a captive. Abbas said, "Messenger of Allah, by Allah, this man did not capture me. I was captured by a man with a bald forehead, the most handsome of faces, riding a piebald horse. I do not see him among the people."The Ansari said, "I captured him, Messenger of Allah."He said, "Be silent, for Allah Most High has supported you with a noble angel."Ali said, "We captured from Banu Abdul-Muttalib Abbas, Aqeel, and Nawfal bin Harith."
Ahmad (948) and Bazzar - Kashf Astar (1761) narrated it, both from the hadith of Israil, from Abu Ishaq, from Haritha bin Mudarrib, from Ali, who mentioned it. The wording is Ahmad's. Abu Dawud (2665) also narrated it, and Hakim (3/194) and Bayhaqi in Dalail (3/42) both graded it sahih, all of them through routes from Israil, narrating part of it. Its chain of transmission is sahih.Haythami mentioned it in Majma (6/75-76) and said, Ahmad and Bazzar narrated it, and the men of Ahmad's chain are the men of sahih, apart from Haritha bin Mudarrib, who is trustworthy.I say, Haythami's statement suggests that Bazzar narrated it through another route, but this is not as he said. As for Haritha bin Mudarrib, with the doubled and vowelled ra, Ibn Main deemed him trustworthy, and whoever relied on Ibn Madini's supposed statement that he abandoned him has erred. His saying, "I would have bitten it," comes from biting with the molars, meaning he said to him, "Bite off some of your father." His saying, "O yellow-buttocked one," the "ist" means the rear, meaning he was accusing him of passive sodomy, and that he used to dye his buttocks with saffron. It is also said that this is a phrase said to the pampered and spoiled person who has not been seasoned by trials and hardships. So said Ibn Athir.
