Utbah bin Rabia stepped forward, followed by his son and his brother, and called out, "Who will come to duel?"Some young men from the Ansar responded to his challenge.He asked, "Who are you?"They told him.He said, "We have no need of you. We only want our cousins."So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Stand up, Hamza. Stand up, Ali. Stand up, Ubayda bin Harith."Hamza advanced toward Utbah, I advanced toward Shayb, and Ubayda and Walid exchanged two blows, each wounding the other severely. Then we turned on Walid and killed him, and we carried Ubayda away.
تقدم يعني عتبة بن ربيعة، وتبعه ابنه وأخوه، فنادى: من يبارز؟ فانتدب له شباب من الأنصار، فقال: من أنتم؟ فأخبروه، فقال: لا حاجة لنا فيكم، إنما أردنا بني عمنا، فقال رسول الله ﷺ: قم يا حمزة، قم يا علي، قم يا عبيدة بن الحارث فأقبل حمزة إلى عتبة، وأقبلت إلى شيبة، واختلف بين عبيدة والوليد ضربتان، فأثخن كل واحد منهما صاحبه، ثم ملنا على الوليد، فقتلناه، واحتملنا عبيدة.
Abu Dawud (2665) and Ahmad (948) narrated it, and Hakim (3/194) graded it sahih, through chains from Israil, from Abu Ishaq, from Haritha bin Mudarrib, from Ali, and he related it.The wording given is Abu Dawud's, and Ahmad's version is longer and is mentioned in the account of the private conversation.Its chain is sahih. Israil's narration from his grandfather is of the utmost precision, and Shuba used to give him precedence over himself regarding Abu Ishaq.Hakim said, sahih according to the criteria of the two Shaykhs.Dhahabi critiqued this, saying, they did not narrate for Haritha, and Ibn Madini had weakened him.I say, yes, they did not narrate for Haritha, but Ibn Madini's grading of him as daif is not established. Rather, Ibn Jawzi transmitted in his book on daif narrators (1/185), following Azdi, that Ibn Madini said, "abandoned in hadith." Therefore Ibn Hajar said in his Taqrib, "Trustworthy, whoever transmitted from Ibn Madini that he declared him abandoned made a mistake."
