I heard Abu Dharr swear an oath that this verse, "These are two opposing parties who disputed concerning their Lord" [Hajj 22:19], was revealed about those who came forward for single combat on the day of Badr, Hamza, Ali, and Ubayda bin Harith, and Utba and Shayba, the two sons of Rabia, and Walid bin Utba.
سمعت أبا ذر يقسم قسما إن هذه الآية {هذان خصمان اختصموا في ربهم} [الحج: ١٩] نزلت في الذين برزوا يوم بدر: حمزة، وعلي، وعبيدة بن الحارث، وعتبة وشيبة ابني ربيعة، والوليد بن عتبة.
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Military Expeditions (3966, 3969, 3968), and Muslim in the Book of Tafsir (34:3033), both through routes from Abu Hashim (he is Rumani Wasiti), from Abu Majliz, from Qays bin Abbad, who said, I heard Abu Dharr swearing an oath, and he mentioned it.
