Urwa bin Zubayr informed me that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ met Zubayr in a caravan of Muslims who were merchants returning from Sham. Zubayr clothed the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr in white garments. The Muslims in Medina had heard of the Messenger of Allah's ﷺ departure from Mecca, so every morning they would go out to the Harra and wait for him until the midday heat drove them back. One day, after they had waited for a long time, they returned to their homes. After they had retreated indoors, a Jewish man climbed up onto one of their forts to look out for something he wanted to see, and he caught sight of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and his companions, dressed in white, with the mirage shimmering around them. The Jew could not contain himself and called out at the top of his voice, "People of Arabia, here is your good fortune, the man you have been waiting for!"The Muslims rushed to their weapons and met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ on the high ground of the Harra. He turned with them to the right and stopped among the tribe of Amr bin Awf. This was on a Monday in the month of Rabi Awwal.Abu Bakr stood to receive the people while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ sat silently. Some of the Ansar who came and had not seen the Messenger of Allah ﷺ before began greeting Abu Bakr, until the sun reached the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Abu Bakr came forward and shaded him with his cloak, and at that moment the people recognized the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.The Messenger of Allah ﷺ stayed among the tribe of Amr bin Awf for some ten nights, and during that time he founded the mosque that was founded on piety, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ prayed in it. Then he mounted his she-camel and set off, with the people walking alongside him, until she knelt down at the site of the Messenger's ﷺ mosque in Medina. Some men of the Muslims were praying in that spot at the time. It was a date-drying yard belonging to Suhayl and Sahl, two orphan boys under the care of Saad bin Zurara. When his she-camel knelt, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "This, Allah willing, is the dwelling place." Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ called the two boys and bargained with them for the yard so he could turn it into a mosque. They said, "Rather, we will give it to you as a gift, Messenger of Allah."But the Messenger of Allah ﷺ refused to accept it from them as a gift and instead purchased it from them. Then he built it as a mosque, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ began carrying mudbricks alongside them in its construction. As he carried the bricks, he was saying,"This load is not the load of Khaybar, This is more virtuous, our Lord, and purer."And he would say,"O Allah, the true reward is the reward of the hereafter, So have mercy on the Ansar and the Muhajirin."He was reciting verses from a Muslim man whose name was not given to me.Ibn Shihab said, "It has not reached us in the narrations that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ever recited a complete line of poetry other than this one."
Bukhari narrated it in the Book of Virtues (3906) with the aforementioned chain, from Yahya bin Bukayr, who said, Layth narrated to us, from Aqeel, Ibn Shihab said, "Urwa bin Zubayr informed me," and he mentioned it. Its form is mursal, but Hakim connected it through the route of Mamar, from Zuhri, who said, "Urwa informed me that he heard it from Zubayr." Hafiz mentioned this in Fath al-Bari (7/243).And with Abdul-Razzaq (5/395), from Mamar, who said, Zuhri said, "Urwa bin Zubayr informed me that he met Zubayr and a group of the Muslims rode..." and he mentioned something similar. There is disagreement about whether Urwa heard directly from his father Zubayr. The two Shaykhs affirmed it and included his narration in their Sahihs, while the others confirmed his reliability.
