When the Prophet ﷺ and Abu Bakr set out in secret, they passed by a slave who was tending sheep, and they asked him for some milk. He replied, "I have no ewe that gives milk, except that there is a young she-goat here that conceived at the beginning of winter and miscarried, and no milk remains in her."The Prophet ﷺ said, "Bring her to me."So he brought her, and the Prophet ﷺ took hold of her, wiped her udder, and prayed until she let down her milk. Abu Bakr brought a hollow vessel, and the Prophet ﷺ milked her and gave Abu Bakr to drink. Then he milked her again and gave the shepherd to drink. Then he milked her once more and drank himself. The shepherd said, "By Allah, who are you? By Allah, I have never seen anyone like you."He said, "Will you keep my secret if I tell you?"The shepherd replied, "Yes."He said, "I am Muhammad, the Messenger of Allah."The shepherd said, "Are you the one whom the Quraysh claim is an apostate?"He answered, "They do say that."The shepherd said, "I bear witness that you are a prophet, and I bear witness that what you have brought is the truth, and that no one could do what you have done except a prophet. I will follow you."He said, "You will not be able to do that today. When you hear that I have prevailed, then come to us."

Tabarani reported it in Al-Kabir (18/343), and Bazzar in Kashf Astar (1743), and Hakim (8/3–9), and from him Bayhaqi in Dalail (2/498), all of them from Abu Walid Tayalisi, Hisham bin Abdul-Malik, who said, Ubaydullah bin Iyad bin Laqeet narrated to us, Iyad bin Laqeet narrated to us, from Qays bin Numan, who said, and then he mentioned it. Ibn Abdul-Barr also referred to it in Al-Istiab, in the biography of Qays bin Numan.Hakim said, "This hadith has a sahih chain of transmission." I say, it is as he said, for its narrators are trustworthy. Bazzar did criticize Ubaydullah bin Iyad bin Laqeet, but he is trustworthy, as Nasai and others confirmed his reliability, and Ibn Hajar deemed its chain sahih in Al-Isabah (5/506).As for Hafiz bin Kathir's statement in Al-Bidayah wal-Nihayah (4/481), after quoting Bayhaqi's remark, "It is possible that all these stories are one and the same," and then mentioning a story resembling the story of the goat of Umm Mabad Khuzaiyah, this is far-fetched. The story of Qays bin Numan is an independent story that took place during the migration.Bazzar referred to it, saying, "We do not know of Qays narrating from the Prophet ﷺ anything other than this, and we do not know it with this wording from anyone but him, and it differs from the rest of the hadiths about the story of Umm Mabad, but this was narrated by Ubayd bin Iyad."Haythami said in Al-Majmu (6/58), "Bazzar reported it, and its narrators are the narrators of the sahih."Al-anaq means a female kid from the offspring of goats. And his saying "akhdajat" means she delivered her offspring with an incomplete form.
