Ibn Shihab reported,

Abdul-Rahman bin Malik al-Mudliji, the nephew of Suraqa bin Malik bin Jasham, reported that his father informed him that he heard Suraqa bin Jasham say:The messengers of the disbelievers of Quraysh came to us, offering a blood-money reward for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr, to be paid to whoever killed or captured either of them.While I was sitting in one of the gatherings of my people, the Banu Mudlij, a man from among them came up and stood over us as we sat. He said, "Suraqa, I have just seen some dark figures on the coast. I think they are Muhammad and his companions."Suraqa said, I knew it was them, but I told him, "They are not them. You only saw so-and-so and so-and-so, who set out before our eyes."I remained in the gathering for a while, then I got up and went home. I ordered my slave-girl to bring out my horse, which was kept behind a hill, and to hold it ready for me. I took my spear and went out from the back of the house, dragging its butt along the ground while keeping its tip lowered, until I reached my horse and mounted it. I urged it to gallop and bring me close to them.When I drew near them, my horse stumbled and I fell off. I got up and reached into my quiver and took out my divining arrows, drawing lots with them to see whether I should harm them or not. The result I disliked came out. So I mounted my horse again, disregarding the arrows, and it brought me closer.When I could hear the Messenger of Allah ﷺ reciting, while he himself did not turn around but Abu Bakr kept turning, my horse's forelegs sank into the ground up to the knees. I fell off it, then urged it on. It rose, but could barely pull its forelegs out. When it stood upright, a column of dust like smoke rose from where its legs had been, climbing high into the sky.I drew lots again with the divining arrows, and again the result I disliked came out. So I called out to them, asking for safe conduct, and they stopped. I mounted my horse and rode up to them. When I experienced what had happened to me being held back from them, it occurred to me that the cause of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ would surely prevail.I said to him, "Your people have set a blood-money reward on you," and I informed them of what people intended against them. I offered them provisions and supplies, but they took nothing from me and asked me for nothing, except that he said, "Conceal our whereabouts."I asked him to write me a guarantee of safety, so he ordered Amir bin Fuhayra, who wrote it on a piece of leather. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ continued on his way.

عن ابن شهاب قال

وأخبرني عبد الرحمن بن مالك المدلجي- وهو ابن أخي سراقة بن مالك ابن جعشم- أن أباه أخبره أنه سمع سراقة بن جعشم يقول: جاءنا رسل كفار قريش يجعلون في رسول الله ﷺ وأبي بكر دية كل واحد منهما لمن قتله أو أسره، فبينما أنا جالس في مجلس من مجالس قومي بني مدلج إذ أقبل رجل منهم حتى قام علينا ونحن جلوس فقال: يا سراقة، إني قد رأيت آنفا أسودة بالساحل أراها محمدا وأصحابه. قال سراقة: فعرفت أنهم هم، فقلت له: إنهم ليسوا بهم، ولكنك رأيت فلانا وفلانا انطلقوا بأعيننا، ثم لبثت في المجلس ساعة، ثم قمت فدخلت فأمرت جاريتي أن تخرج بفرسي- وهي من وراء أكمة- فتحبسها علي، وأخذت رمحي فخرجت به من ظهر البيت فخططت بزجه الأرض، وخفضت عاليه، حتى أتيت فرسي فركبتها، فرفعتها تقرب بي، حتى دنوت منهم، فعثرت بي فرسي، فخررت عنها، فقمت فأهويت يدي إلى كناني فاستخرجت منها الأزلام، فاستقسمت بها، أضرهم أم لا؟ فخرج الذي أكره، فركبت فرسي وعصيت الأزلام- تقرب بي، حتى إذا سمعت قراءة رسول الله ﷺ وهو لا يلتفت، وأبو بكر يكثر الالتفات، ساخت يدا فرسي في الأرض حتى بلغتا الركبتين، فخررت عنها، ثم زجرتها، فنهضت فلم تكد تخرج يديها، فلما استوت قائمة إذا لأثر يديها عثان ساطع في السماء مثل الدخان، فاستقسمت بالأزلام فخرج الذي أكره، فناديتهم بالأمان، فوقفوا، فركبت فرسي حتى جئتهم. ووقع في نفسي حين لقيت ما لقيت من الحبس عنهم أن سيظهر أمر رسول الله ﷺ فقلت له: إن قومك قد جعلوا فيك الدية، وأخبرتهم أخبار ما يريد الناس بهم، وعرضت عليهم الزاد والمتاع، فلم يرزآني، ولم يسألاني إلا أن قال: أخف عنا، فسألته أن يكتب لي كتاب أمن، فأمر عامر بن فهيرة فكتب في رقعة من أدم، ثم مضى رسول الله ﷺ.
