Abdul-Rahman bin Malik reported,

His father Malik informed him that his brother Suraqa bin Jasham reported to him, saying:When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ left Mecca migrating to Medina, the Quraysh offered a reward of one hundred she-camels to whoever returned him to them.He said, While I was sitting in the assembly of my people, a man from among us came and said, "By Allah, I have just seen three riders pass by me. I think he is Muhammad."I gestured to him with my eye to be silent, and I said, "They are only the sons of so-and-so searching for a stray animal of theirs."He said, "Perhaps so," and fell silent.I waited a little, then got up and went into my house and ordered my horse to be brought to me. It was tied up for me at the bottom of the valley. I took out my weapons from behind my chambers, then took my divining arrows to seek an omen with them. Then I put on my armor and brought out my divining arrows and cast lots with them. The arrow I disliked came out, "Do not harm him." But I had hoped to bring him back and take the hundred she-camels.So I rode after him. As my horse was carrying me along, it stumbled and I fell off. I took out my divining arrows and cast lots with them, and again the arrow I disliked came out, "Do not harm him." But I refused to do anything but follow him. So I mounted again. When the group came into view and I looked at them, my horse stumbled with me and its forelegs sank into the ground, and I fell off. It pulled its forelegs out, and following them came smoke like dust. Then I knew that he was protected from me and would prevail.So I called out to them, saying, "Wait for me. By Allah, I will not harm you, and nothing from me will come to you that you dislike."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Ask him, what does he want?"I said, "Write a document for me that will be a sign between me and you."He said, "Write for him, Abu Bakr."So he wrote it for me, then tossed it to me. I returned and kept silent and did not mention any of what had happened.When Allah, Mighty and Majestic, opened Mecca, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had finished with the people of Khaybar, I went out to meet the Messenger of Allah ﷺ with the document he had written for me. While I was heading toward him, I entered into the midst of one of the squadrons of the Ansar. They began to strike me with their spears, saying, "Get back, get back," until I drew near to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ while he was on his she-camel. I could see his leg in the stirrup, as if it were the heart of a palm. I raised my hand with the document and said, "Messenger of Allah, this is your document."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "A day of fulfillment and faithfulness. Come closer."So I embraced Islam. Then I remembered something I wanted to ask the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about.Ibn Shihab said, He only asked him about a stray animal and something he had done on his journey. I do not remember anything except that I said, "Messenger of Allah, stray animals come to my watering troughs which I have filled for my camels. Will I receive any reward if I water them?"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Yes, in every thirsty liver there is a reward."He said, Then I departed and later brought my charity to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.

عن عبد الرحمن بن مالك بن جعشم المدلجي

أن أباه مالكا أخبره أن أخاه سراقة بن جعشم أخبره قال: أنه لما خرج رسول الله ﷺ من مكة مهاجرا إلى المدينة جعلت قريش لمن رده عليهم مائة ناقة قال: فبينما أنا جالس في نادي قومي إذ جاء رجل منا فقال: والله لقد رأيت ركبا ثلاثة مروا علي آنفا، إني لأظنه محمدا، قال: فأومأت إليه بعيني، أن اسكت، وقلت: إنما هو بنو فلان يبتغون ضالة لهم، قال: لعله، ثم سكت. قال: فمكثت قليلا، ثم قمت فدخلت بيتي وأمرت بفرسي، فقيد إلي بطن الوادي، وأخرجت سلاحي من وراء حجراتي، ثم أخذت قداحي استقسم بها، ثم لبست لأمتي، ثم أخرجت قداحي فاستقسمت بها، فخرج السهم الذي أكره: لا تضره، وكنت أرجو أن أرده فآخذ المائة ناقة. قال: فركبت على أثره، فبينا فرسي يسير بي عثر، فسقطت عنه، قال: فأخرجت قداحي فاستقسمت بها فخرج السهم الذي أكره: لا تضره، فأبيت إلا أن أتبعه، فركبت، فلما بدا لي القوم فنظرت إليهم عثر بي فرسي فذهبت يداه في الأرض، فسقطت عنه، فاستخرج يديه واتبعهما دخان مثل الغبار، فعلمت أنه قد منع مني، وأنه ظاهر، فناديتهم، فقلت: انظروني فوالله لا آذيتكم، ولا يأتيكم مني شيء تكرهونه. فقال رسول الله ﷺ: قل له: ماذا تبتغي؟ قال: قلت اكتب لي كتابا يكون بيني وبينك آية، قال: اكتب له يا أبا بكر، قال: فكتب لي ثم ألقاه إلي، فرجعت، فسكت، فلم أذكر شيئا مما كان، حتى إذا فتح الله عزوجل مكة، وفرغ رسول الله ﷺ من أهل خيبر، خرجت إلى رسول الله ﷺ لألقاه ومعي الكتاب الذي كتب لي، فبينما أنا عامد له دخلت بين ظهري كتيبة من كتائب الأنصار، قال: فطفقوا يقرعونني بالرماح، ويقولون: إليك، إليك، حتى دنوت من رسول الله ﷺ وهو على ناقته أنظر إلى ساقه في غرزه، كأنها جمارة، فرفعت يدي بالكتاب، فقلت: يا رسول الله! هذا كتابك، فقال رسول الله ﷺ: يوم وفاء وبر، أدنه، قال: فأسلمت، ثم ذكرت شيئا أسل عنه رسول الله ﷺ. قال ابن شهاب: إنما سأله عن الضالة، وشيء فعله في وجهه الذي كان فيه، فما ذكرت شيئا إلا أني قد قلت يا رسول الله! الضالة تغشى حياضي قد ملأتها لإبلي هل لي من أجر إن سقيتها؟ فقال رسول الله ﷺ: نعم في كل كبد حرى. قال: وانصرفت فسقت إلى رسول الله ﷺ صدقتي.
