Ayesha said, "I never knew my parents to be anything other than followers of this religion, and not a day passed without the Messenger of Allah ﷺ visiting us at both ends of the day, morning and evening."When the Muslims were put to trial, Abu Bakr set out emigrating toward the land of Abyssinia. When he reached Bark al-Ghimad, he was met by Ibn al-Daghinah, who was the chief of the Qarah tribe.Ibn al-Daghinah asked, "Where are you headed, Abu Bakr?"Abu Bakr replied, "My people have driven me out, so I want to travel through the land and worship my Lord."Ibn al-Daghinah said, "A man like you, Abu Bakr, should not leave nor be driven out. You help the destitute, maintain ties of kinship, bear the burdens of others, host guests, and assist in matters of truth. I am your protector. Return and worship your Lord in your own land."So Abu Bakr returned, and Ibn al-Daghinah traveled with him. In the evening, Ibn al-Daghinah went around to the noblemen of Quraysh and said to them, "A man like Abu Bakr should not leave nor be driven out. Would you expel a man who helps the destitute, maintains kinship ties, bears others' burdens, hosts guests, and assists in matters of truth?"Quraysh did not reject Ibn al-Daghinah's protection, but they said to him, "Tell Abu Bakr to worship his Lord inside his own home. Let him pray there and recite whatever he wishes, but he must not disturb us with it or display it openly, for we fear he may seduce our women and children."Ibn al-Daghinah conveyed this to Abu Bakr, and Abu Bakr remained for some time worshipping his Lord in his own home, neither praying openly nor reciting outside his house. Then it occurred to Abu Bakr to build a place of prayer in the courtyard of his home, where he would pray and recite the Quran. The women and children of the polytheists began to crowd around him, marveling at him and looking at him. Abu Bakr was a tearful man who could not control his eyes whenever he recited the Quran. This alarmed the noblemen of Quraysh among the polytheists, so they sent for Ibn al-Daghinah, who came to them. They said, "We granted Abu Bakr protection on the condition that he worship his Lord in his own home, but he has gone beyond that. He has built a place of prayer in his courtyard and openly performs prayer and recitation in it. We fear he will seduce our women and children, so restrain him. If he is willing to confine himself to worshipping his Lord in his home, let him do so. But if he insists on doing it openly, ask him to release you from your covenant of protection, for we do not wish to break our pact with you, and we will not tolerate Abu Bakr's open display."Ayesha continued, "Ibn al-Daghinah came to Abu Bakr and said, 'You know the terms on which I made my covenant with you. Either confine yourself to those terms, or return my protection to me, for I do not wish the Arabs to hear that I broke my pact with a man to whom I had given protection.'"Abu Bakr said, 'I return your protection to you, and I am content with the protection of Allah .'"At that time the Prophet ﷺ was in Mecca, and he said to the Muslims, 'I have been shown the place of your migration, a land of palm trees between two stony tracts,' meaning the two harrahs. So those who emigrated did so toward Medina, and most of those who had migrated to Abyssinia returned to Medina."Abu Bakr also prepared to leave for Medina, but the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him, 'Wait, for I hope I will be granted permission.'"Abu Bakr asked, 'Do you really hope for that, may my father be ransomed for you?'"He replied, 'Yes.'"So Abu Bakr held himself back to accompany the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he fed two riding camels he had with the leaves of the samur tree (which is khabat) for four months."Ibn Shihab said that Urwa reported that Ayesha said, "One day, while we were sitting in Abu Bakr's house at noon, someone said to Abu Bakr, 'This is the Messenger of Allah ﷺ coming with his head covered, at an hour when he does not usually come to us.'"Abu Bakr said, 'May my father and mother be ransomed for him. By Allah, he has not come at this hour except for some matter.'"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ arrived, asked permission to enter, and was admitted."The Prophet ﷺ said to Abu Bakr, 'Send out those who are with you.'"Abu Bakr replied, 'They are only your family, may my father be ransomed for you, Messenger of Allah.'"The Prophet said, 'I have been granted permission to leave.'"Abu Bakr asked, 'May I have your companionship, may my father be ransomed for you, Messenger of Allah?'"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'Yes.'"Abu Bakr said, 'Then take, may my father be ransomed for you, Messenger of Allah, one of these two riding camels of mine.'"The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, 'For its price.'"Ayesha continued, "We prepared their provisions in haste and packed food for them in a leather bag. Asma bint Abu Bakr cut off a piece of her waistband and tied it around the mouth of the bag, and that is why she was called Dhat al-Nitaqayn (the one with the two waistbands)."Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr reached a cave in the mountain of Thawr and hid in it for three nights. Abdullah bin Abu Bakr would spend the night with them. He was a sharp, intelligent young man. He would slip away from them at dawn and be among the Quraysh in Mecca by morning as if he had spent the night there. He would not hear any plot against them without committing it to memory, and he would bring them news of it when darkness fell."Amir bin Fuhayrah, Abu Bakr's freed slave, would graze a flock of milk-giving sheep for them and bring them to the cave in the early evening, so they spent their nights drinking the fresh milk and eating from their meat. Then Amir bin Fuhayrah would drive the flock away in the early dawn. He did this every night during those three nights."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ and Abu Bakr had hired a man from Banu al-Dil, who was from Banu Abd bin Adi, as an expert guide. A khirrit is one skilled in guiding. He had sworn an alliance with the family of al-As bin Waail al-Sahmi and followed the religion of the disbelievers of Quraysh, but they trusted him and handed over their riding camels to him, with an appointment to meet him at the cave of Thawr after three nights with their camels on the morning of the third day."Amir bin Fuhayrah and the guide set out with them, and the guide led them along the coastal route."
Bukhari narrated it in the Merits of the Ansar (3905) from Yahya bin Bukayr, who said, Layth narrated to us, from Aqeel. Ibn Shihab said, Urwa bin Zubayr informed me that Ayesha, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, said, and then she mentioned the hadith in full.
