Bukhari narrated it in "Virtues" (3928), from Yahya bin Sulayman, who said, "Ibn Wahb told me, Malik told us, and Yunus informed me, from Ibn Shihab, who said, Ubaydullah bin Abdullah informed me, that Ibn Abbas told him," and he related it.His statement, "I will surely stand at the first opportunity," means, I will stand to give a speech when I return to Madinah, instead of at Mina.His statement, "the abode of migration and the sunnah," means that the sunnah has its source in Madinah, because the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, who are the pillars of the community, are there, and the people depend on them.This is an abridged hadith whose meaning does not become clear from it alone. Bukhari narrated it in full in "Holding Fast" (7323), and it reads as follows.Ibn Abbas said, I used to teach Abdul-Rahman bin Awf the Quran. During the last pilgrimage Umar performed, Abdul-Rahman said at Mina, "If only you had seen the Commander of the Faithful, when a man came to him and said, 'So-and-so says, "If the Commander of the Faithful were to die, we would pledge allegiance to so-and-so."' Umar said, 'I will stand up this evening and warn this group who want to seize power from them.'"I said, "Do not do that, for the pilgrimage season gathers the rabble of people, who will overwhelm your gathering. I fear they will not grasp it properly, and every rumor-monger will spread it far and wide. So wait until you reach Madinah, the abode of migration and the abode of the sunnah, where you can be alone with the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from among the Migrants and the Helpers, so they may preserve your words and place them in their proper context."He said, "By Allah, I will surely say it at the first opportunity I have in Madinah."Ibn Abbas said, "So we arrived in Madinah." Then he said, "Allah sent Muhammad ﷺ with the truth, and revealed the Book to him, and among what He revealed was the verse of stoning."He narrated it through another route, from Maamar, from Zuhri, with his own chain, and he also related it in "Legal Punishments" (6830) at greater length, through another route from Ibn Shihab with his chain, which includes, "Whoever understands it and retains it, let him relate it wherever his mount takes him, but whoever fears he will not understand it properly, then I do not permit anyone to lie about me." Then he mentioned a long sermon.
