Umar bin Khattab reported,

Umar bin Khattab said, "When we decided to emigrate to Madinah, I, Ayyash bin Abu Rabia, and Hisham bin Asi bin Waail Sahmi agreed to meet at the acacia trees by the pools of Banu Ghifar, above Sarif. We said, 'Whichever of us is not there by morning has been detained, so let his two companions go on without him.'"Ayyash bin Abu Rabia and I were there at the acacia trees by morning, but Hisham was held back. When we reached Madinah we stayed among Banu Amr bin Awf at Quba."Then Abu Jahl bin Hisham and Harith bin Hisham set out after Ayyash bin Abu Rabia, for he was their cousin and their half brother through their mother, and they came all the way to Madinah while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was still in Makkah. They spoke to him and said, 'Your mother has vowed that no comb will touch her hair until she sees you, and that she will take no shade from the sun until she sees you.' He was moved with pity for her."I said to him, 'Ayyash, by Allah, these men want nothing from you but to turn you away from your religion, so beware of them. By Allah, if the lice troubled your mother she would comb her hair, and if the heat of Makkah grew hard on her she would seek shade.'"He replied, 'I must fulfil my mother's oath, and besides, I have property there that I can collect.'"I said, 'By Allah, you know that I am among the wealthiest men of Quraysh. Take half of my wealth, only do not go with those two.'"But he refused, and would go with them. When he insisted, I said to him, 'Well then, since you have made up your mind, take this she camel of mine. She is a fine, docile beast. Stay on her back, and if you suspect any treachery from these men, escape on her.'"So he rode out with them on her. When they had gone part of the way, Abu Jahl said to him, 'Nephew, by Allah, this camel of mine has become rough going. Won't you let me ride behind you on that she camel of yours?'"Ayyash said, 'Of course.'"So he made her kneel, and they made their camels kneel too, so that Abu Jahl could move onto her. But the moment they were all on the ground the two of them fell upon him, tied him up, and bound him fast. Then they brought him into Makkah and put him to the test until he renounced his faith."We used to say, 'Allah will accept nothing from anyone who has renounced his faith, no ransom, no substitute, no repentance. These are men who knew Allah and then returned to disbelief because of some trial that befell them.' And they themselves were saying the same thing about themselves."Then, when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Madinah, Allah Most High sent down concerning them, and concerning what we had said and what they had said about themselves, "Say, My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed Allah forgives all sins. Truly He is the Forgiving, the Merciful. Turn back to your Lord and submit to Him before the punishment comes upon you, for then you will not be helped. And follow the best of what has been sent down to you from your Lord before the punishment comes upon you suddenly while you are unaware" [Zumar 39:53–55].Umar bin Khattab said, "I wrote these verses out with my own hand on a sheet and sent them to Hisham bin Asi."Hisham bin Asi said, "When it reached me I began reading it at Dhu Tuwa, going up the valley and down again with it, and I could not grasp its meaning, until at last I said, 'Allah, make me understand it.' Then Allah Most High cast into my heart the realization that it had been sent down about none but us, and about what we had been saying to ourselves and what was being said about us. So I went back to my camel, mounted it, and joined the Messenger of Allah ﷺ in Madinah."
