The Messenger of Allah ﷺ spent ten years following the pilgrims to their lodgings during the pilgrimage season, at Majannah, at Ukaz, and in their dwellings at Mina, saying, "Who will give me shelter? Who will support me, so that I may convey the messages of my Lord, and his reward will be Paradise?" Yet he found no one to support him or shelter him. A man might travel from Mudar or from Yemen to a relative of his, and his people would come to him and say, "Beware of the young man of Quraysh, lest he sway you." He would walk among their tents calling them to Allah , while they pointed at him with their fingers. Then Allah
sent him support from Yathrib. A man would come to him, believe in him, and the Prophet would teach him the Quran. The man would return to his family, and they would embrace Islam through his Islam, until there was no household among the households of Yathrib without a group of Muslims openly practicing Islam. Then Allah sent for us, and we conferred among ourselves and gathered, seventy men of us. We said, "How long will we leave the Messenger of Allah ﷺ driven about in the mountains of Makkah and living in fear?" So we set out and came to him during the pilgrimage season, and we made an appointment with him at the mountain pass of Aqaba. His uncle Abbas said, "Nephew, I do not know who these people are who have come to you. I am well acquainted with the people of Yathrib."We gathered with him, in ones and twos. When Abbas looked at our faces, he said, "These are people I do not know. These are youngsters."We said, "Messenger of Allah, on what shall we pledge allegiance to you?"He said, "You pledge allegiance to me to hear and obey, in eagerness and in reluctance, to spend in hardship and in ease, to enjoin good and forbid evil, to speak the truth for the sake of Allah without fearing the blame of any blamer, and to support me when I come to Yathrib and to defend me from whatever you defend yourselves, your wives, and your children from. And in return, you will have Paradise."So we rose to pledge allegiance to him. Asad bin Zurara took his hand, and he was the youngest of the seventy, and he said, "Slow down, people of Yathrib. We have not pressed the livers of our mounts in this journey except knowing that he is the Messenger of Allah. To take him out today means parting from all the Arabs, the killing of your best men, and being struck by swords. Either you are a people who can endure the swords when they touch you, the slaying of your best, and separation from all the Arabs, then take him, and your reward is with Allah. Or you are a people who fear for yourselves, then leave him, for that is more excusable before Allah."They said, "Asad bin Zurara, take your hand off us. By Allah, we will not abandon this pledge, nor will we ask to be released from it."So we rose to him one by one, and Abbas held us to the conditions, while the Prophet promised us Paradise in return.
Imam Ahmad narrated it (14653), and Ibn Hibban graded it sahih (7012), as did Hakim (2/624–625), all of them from the hadith of Yahya bin Salim, from Abdullah bin Uthman bin Khuthaym, from Abu Zubayr, that Jabir bin Abdullah narrated it to him, and he mentioned it.Ahmad also narrated it (14456), and Bazzar in Kashf Astar (1756), and Ibn Hibban (6274), all of them by way of Abdul-Razzaq, who said, Muammar informed us, from Abdullah bin Uthman bin Khuthaym, in a similar manner. It has other routes of transmission from Ibn Khuthaym. Its isnad is hasan because of Abu Zubayr, for his hadith is hasan when he states his source explicitly.
