We said, "Messenger of Allah, how were you taken on the night journey?"He replied, "I had prayed the night prayer in Mecca with my turban on, and Jibreel came to me with a white animal, larger than a donkey and smaller than a mule. He said, 'Mount.' But it proved difficult for me, so he turned it by its ear and helped me onto it. It set off, racing with us, its hoof landing as far as its sight could reach, until we arrived at a land of palm trees. He brought me down and said, 'Pray.' So I prayed. Then we mounted again, and he asked, 'Do you know where you prayed?'I said, 'Allah knows best.'He said, 'You prayed at Yathrib, you prayed at Taybah.'Then it set off, racing with us, its hoof landing as far as its sight could reach, until we reached a land. He said, 'Dismount.' So I dismounted. Then he said, 'Pray.' So I prayed. Then we mounted, and he asked, 'Do you know where you prayed?'I said, 'Allah knows best.'He said, 'You prayed at Madyan, you prayed at the tree of Musa
.'Then it set off, racing with us, its hoof landing as far as its sight could reach, until we reached a land where palaces appeared before us. He said, 'Dismount.' So I dismounted. He said, 'Pray.' So I prayed. Then we mounted, and he asked, 'Do you know where you prayed?'I said, 'Allah knows best.'He said, 'You prayed at Bethlehem, where Isa
the Messiah, son of Mary, was born.'Then he took me onward until we entered the city through its southern gate. He came to the qiblah of the mosque and tethered his animal there, and we entered the mosque through a gate where the sun and moon incline. I prayed in the mosque as much as Allah willed. Then thirst overcame me as it never had before, and I was brought two vessels, one containing milk and the other honey, both sent to me together. I weighed them against each other, then Allah
guided me, so I took the milk and drank until I struck my forehead with the vessel. Before me was an old man reclining on his elbow, and he said, 'Your companion has chosen the natural disposition. Truly he is rightly guided.'Then he took me onward until we came to the valley in the city, and there was Hell, uncovered like a carpet."I asked, "Messenger of Allah, how did you find it?"He said, "Like a hot spring. Then he turned back with me, and we passed by a caravan of Quraysh at such-and-such a place. They had lost a camel, and so-and-so had gathered it. I greeted them with peace, and one of them said, 'That is the voice of Muhammad.'Then I returned to my companions in Mecca before dawn. Abu Bakr
came to me and said, 'Messenger of Allah, where were you tonight? I sought you at your usual place.'I said, 'Do you know that I went to Bayt al-Maqdis tonight?'He said, 'Messenger of Allah, that is a month's journey. Describe it to me.'So a path was opened up for me as if I were looking right at it. He did not ask me about anything without my informing him about it. Abu Bakr said, 'I bear witness that you are the Messenger of Allah.'The polytheists said, 'Look at Ibn Abu Kabsha. He claims he went to Bayt al-Maqdis tonight!'He said, 'A sign of what I am telling you is that I passed by a caravan of yours at such-and-such a place. They had lost a camel, and so-and-so gathered it. On their journey they will halt at such-and-such a place, then at such-and-such a place, and they will reach you on such-and-such a day. Leading them will be a brown camel bearing a black saddlecloth and two black sacks.'When that day came, the people went out to look, waiting until close to midday, when the caravan arrived, led by the very camel the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had described."

Bayhaqi related it in Dalail (2/355–357), saying, Abu Husayn Ali bin Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Bishran, the trustworthy witness, told us in Baghdad, and this is his wording, he said, Abu Ahmad Hamza bin Muhammad bin Abbas informed us, he said, Muhammad bin Ismail, Abu Ismail, Tirmidhi told us, he said, Ishaq bin Ibrahim bin Ala bin Dahhak Zubaydi told us, he said, Amr bin Harith told us, from Abdullah bin Salim Ashari, from Zubaydi Muhammad bin Walid bin Amir, who said, Walid bin Abdul-Rahman told us, that Jubayr bin Nufayr said, Shaddad bin Aws told us, and then he related the hadith.Bayhaqi said, "This is a sahih chain of transmission, and this has been narrated in scattered form in other hadiths, and we will mention, Allah willing, what we have come across of that."Hafiz bin Kathir said in his Tafsir, after quoting Bayhaqi's statement, "Then he cited many hadiths about the Night Journey as corroborating witnesses for this hadith. This hadith has also been narrated at length from Shaddad bin Aws by the imam Abu Muhammad Abdul-Rahman bin Abu Hatim in his Tafsir, from his father, from Ishaq bin Ibrahim bin Ala Zubaydi, with the same chain. There is no doubt that this hadith, meaning the hadith narrated from Shaddad bin Aws, contains various elements, some of which are sahih, as Bayhaqi mentioned, and some of which are objectionable, such as the prayer in Bethlehem, and Siddiq's asking about the description of Bayt al-Maqdis, and other things." End of quote.I say, perhaps some of the objectionable material stemmed from Ishaq bin Ibrahim bin Ala Zubaydi, known as Ibn Zubariq, who is disputed. Ibn Main praised him well, and Abu Hatim said, "A shaykh with no harm in him, but they envy him." Nasai declared him daif. As for the statement of Muhammad bin Awf Himsi that he used to lie, this is far-fetched. The conclusion regarding him is that his hadith is hasan, except for a few minor points in which he erred.
