He related that he was among those who rebuilt the Kaabah during the days of ignorance. He said, "I had a stone of my own that I had carved with my own hands, which I worshipped instead of Allah, the Blessed and Exalted. I would bring thick milk that I had denied myself and pour it over the stone. Then a dog would come, lick it up, then lift its leg and urinate on it.We kept building until we reached the place of the Black Stone, and no one could see the Stone. There it was, in the middle of our stones, like the head of a man, almost as if a man's face could be seen in it.One clan of Quraysh said, 'We will set it in place.'Others said, 'No, we will set it in place.'They said, 'Appoint a judge between you.'They said, 'The first man to come up through the pass.'Then the Prophet ﷺ came, and they said, 'The trustworthy one has come to you.'They told him about the dispute, and he placed the Stone on a cloth, then called the clans, and they took hold of its sides along with him, and he himself ﷺ set it in place."
Imam Ahmad (15504) and Hakim (1/458) both narrated it from the hadith of Hilal bin Khabab, who said, "Mujahid narrated to us," and he related it.The name of Mujahid's client is Abdullah bin Saaib, as stated explicitly in Dalail al-Nubuwwah by Abu Naeem (1/224).Hakim said, "Sahih according to the criterion of Muslim."Haythami said in Majma (3/292), "Ahmad narrated it, and it contains Hilal bin Khabab, who is trustworthy but has been criticized, while the rest of its narrators are trustworthy."I say, its chain of transmission is hasan due to the criticism directed at Hilal bin Khabab al-Abdi, their client, although his hadith is hasan. Moreover, he is not among the narrators of Muslim, but rather among the narrators of the Sunan.
