When they wanted to lift the Black Stone into place, they fell into dispute over it. They said, "Let us appoint as judge between us the first man to come out of this lane." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was the first to come out to them, so he ruled between them that the stone should be placed in a cloak and that all the tribes together should lift it. Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ himself took it and set it in place.
فلما أرادوا أن يرفعوا الحجر الأسود اختصموا فيه. فقالوا: نحكم بيننا أول رجل يخرج من هذه السكة. فكان رسول الله ﷺ أول من خرج عليهم، فقضى بينهم أن يجعلوه في مرط، ثم ترفعه جميع القبائل كلهم، ثم أخذه رسول الله ﷺ فوضعه.

This was narrated by Hakim (1/458-459) and Bayhaqi in Dalail Nubuwwah (2/55-56), both from the hadith of Simak bin Harb, from Khalid bin Arara, from Ali bin Abu Talib, who mentioned it in a lengthy story. Hakim said, "It is a sahih corroborating witness according to his standard" (meaning that of Muslim). I say, its chain is hasan because of Khalid bin Arara, for his hadith is hasan, except that he is not among the narrators of Muslim, and it is corroborated by the mursal narration of Zuhri.Bayhaqi narrated it in Dalail through the route of Yaqub bin Sufyan, who said, "Asbagh bin Faraj narrated to me, saying, Ibn Wahb informed me, from Yunus, from Ibn Shihab," who said, "When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ reached the age of puberty, a woman was fumigating the Kaaba with incense, and Harith caused a spark to fly from her incense burner onto the cloth coverings of the Kaaba, which caught fire. So they tore it down, and when they rebuilt it, they reached the place of the corner stone. Quraysh disputed over the corner stone, as to which tribe would have the honor of lifting it into place. They said, 'Come, let us have the first person who appears before us decide between us.' Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ appeared before them, while he was still a boy wearing a striped garment. So they appointed him to judge between them. He ordered that the corner stone be placed on a cloth, then he had the chief of each tribe come forward and gave each one a corner of the cloth to hold, then he himself climbed up, and they lifted the stone up to him. He was the one who set it in place. They used to call him the Trustworthy One even before revelation came down to him, and whenever they wanted to slaughter a camel, they would seek him out so that he might invoke a blessing over it."
