Ubaydullah bin Ziyad doubted the existence of the Hawd (the Prophet's basin in the afterlife). There was a Haruri woman with him, and he said, "Have you considered this Hawd that people mention? I do not regard it as anything real."Some of his companions said to him, "You have with you a group of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ. Send for them and ask them."So he sent for a man from Mazina and asked him about the Hawd, and the man related a hadith about it to him. Then he said, "Send for Abu Barza al-Aslami."Abu Barza came wearing two striped Yemeni garments, having wrapped himself in one as a lower garment and draped the other as an upper garment. He was a heavyset man, somewhat short. When Ubaydullah saw him, he laughed and said, "This sheikh of yours is certainly a fine fellow."The old man overheard him and said, "How astonishing! Do I find myself among a people who make excuses for me concerning the Companions of Muhammad ﷺ?"Ubaydullah's attendant said to him, "The governor has only sent for you to ask you about the Hawd. Did you hear anything from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ about it?"He said, "Yes, I heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ mention it. Whoever denies it, may Allah not give him to drink from it." Then he shook out his cloak and left in anger. Then Ubaydullah sent for Zayd bin Arqam and asked him about the Hawd, and he related a hadith that agreed with the previous one. Ubaydullah asked, "Did you really hear this from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ?"Zayd said, "Yes, but my brother related it to me."Ubaydullah said, "We have no need for the hadith of your brother."Then Abu Sirah, a man from among Ubaydullah's companions, said, "When your father set out and took us to Muawiya, I went with him, and I met Abdullah bin Amr bin As. He related a hadith to me directly, mouth to mouth, which he had heard from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. He dictated it to me and I wrote it down."Ubaydullah said, "I will make you forget these two striped garments unless you bring me the document."So I rode the two camels until I was nearly exhausted, and I brought him the document. In it was written, "This is what Abdullah bin Amr bin As related to me, that he heard the Messenger of Allah ﷺ say, 'Allah detests obscenity and the deliberate use of obscene speech. By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, the Hour will not arrive until obscenity and obscene speech, bad neighborliness, and the severing of family ties become widespread, and until the treacherous is trusted and the trustworthy is regarded as treacherous. By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, the most submissive of Muslims is the one from whose tongue and hand the Muslims are safe, and the best emigration is to abandon what Allah has forbidden. By the One in whose hand is my soul, the likeness of the believer is like a piece of gold whose owner blows upon it and it neither changes nor diminishes. By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, the likeness of the believer is like the bee, which eats what is wholesome and produces what is wholesome, and which alights without breaking or spoiling anything. Indeed, I have a basin whose two sides are as far apart as the distance between Ayla and Makkah,' or he said, 'between Sanaa and Madinah. Upon it are pitchers like the stars in number, its water whiter than milk and sweeter than honey. Whoever drinks from it will never thirst again.'"Abu Sirah said, "Ubaydullah took the document and it was lost to me. Then I met Yahya bin Yamar and complained to him about that, and he said, 'By Allah, I have it more firmly memorized than I have a surah of the Quran.' He then related it to me exactly as it had been in the document."
Abdul-Razzaq reported it (20852), as did Ahmad (6514, 6872, 19763) in full and in abridged form, Ibn Abu Asim in Sunnah (700, 701, 702), Hakim (75/1), and Bayhaqi in Bath (155), all of them via various routes from Abdullah bin Burayda, from Abu Sabra, from Abdullah bin Amr bin As, who said it, and he mentioned it at length and in abridged form.Abu Sabra is Salim bin Salama Hudhali. Ibn Hibban mentioned him in Thiqat (308/4). Hakim said, "This is a sahih hadith, for the two Shaykhs agreed on relying upon all its narrators except Abu Sabra Hudhali, who is a major, well known tabii, mentioned in the masanid and the histories, and is not criticized."However, Dhahabi said in Mizan (111/2), regarding Salim bin Sabra, Abu Sabra Hudhali, from whom Ibn Burayda narrated, "Unknown." Haythami cited this same flaw in Majmaa (7/284), saying, "Ahmad reported it in a long hadith, and this Abu Sabra's name is Salim bin Sabra. Abu Hatim said, 'Unknown.'"Yet he was corroborated, for Bazzar reported it in his Musnad (2432) from Yusuf bin Musa, Abdul-Rahman bin Mighraa Dawsi told us, Amash told us, from Abu Ayub, from Abdullah bin Amr bin As, who mentioned it in abridged form. Abdul-Rahman bin Mighraa is disputed. Abu Zura and others deemed him trustworthy, while Ibn Madini graded him daif, but he was corroborated in the first chain. With these two chains, the hadith rises to the level of hasan. Ibn Hajar also graded it hasan in Mukhtasar Zawaid Bazzar (1656).
