Reported by Bazzar in Kashf Astar (226), Tabarani (12432), and Hakim (2/603) - and from him Bayhaqi in Dalail (1/75) - all of them from the hadith of Hajjaj bin Muhammad, who said, "Yunus bin Abu Ishaq narrated to us, from his father, from Saeed bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas," and then he mentioned it. Hakim said, "Sahih according to the standard of the two shaykhs." Its chain is hasan because of Yunus bin Abu Ishaq, for his hadith is hasan. Then Bayhaqi reported it through another route, from Yahya bin Main, who said, "Hajjaj bin Muhammad narrated to us," and he mentioned it with its chain, except that he said, "the day of the elephant." Dhahabi said in Sirah (12/1), "Sahih."His statement "the day of the elephant" means "the year of the elephant," as Ibn Saad said in Tabaqat (1/101), and this is the well known and widely established account in the books of biography and history. The story of the elephant was that a king who ruled Yemen, having conquered it, and who was originally from Abyssinia, called Abrahah, built a church in Sanaa and named it Qullays. He claimed that he would divert the pilgrimage of the Arabs to it, and he swore that he would march to the Kaaba and demolish it, until what happened to him happened, namely his destruction. See the details of that in Thiqat of Ibn Hibban (1/15-21).
