"I was born in the Year of the Elephant, the same year as the Messenger of Allah. We are of the same age, born in the same year."
ولدت أنا ورسول الله عام الفيل. فنحن لدان ولدنا مولدا واحدا.
Reported by Tirmidhi (3619), Ahmad (17891), Hakim (2/603), and from him Bayhaqi in his Dalail (1/76), all of them from the hadith of Muhammad bin Ishaq, who said, Muttalib bin Abdullah bin Qays bin Makhrama told me, from his father, from his grandfather Qays bin Makhrama, meaning bin Muttalib bin Abd Manaf, who said, then he related it. It is also found in Sirat bin Hisham (1/167).Tirmidhi said, "hasan gharib, we do not know it except from the hadith of Muhammad bin Ishaq."Hakim said, "sahih according to the criterion of Muslim."But Muttalib bin Abdullah bin Qays bin Makhrama is not among the narrators relied upon by Muslim, and moreover only Muhammad bin Ishaq narrated from him, and no one deemed him reliable except Ibn Hibban. For this reason Hafiz said, "acceptable," and indeed that is correct, because Ibn Saad reported it in his Tabaqat (1/101) from Hakeem bin Muhammad, Muhammad being the son of Qays bin Makhrama, from his father, from Qays bin Makhrama, who related it. With this corroborating narration, the hadith becomes hasan.
