Ibn Ishaq narrated it. He said, "Muttalib bin Abdullah bin Qays bin Makhrama told me, from his father, from his grandfather Qays bin Makhrama," and he related it. Hakim narrated it through this route (2/605), but he said that he mentioned the birth of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "His father died while his mother was pregnant with him." He said, "Sahih according to the criterion of Muslim." Its chain of transmission is hasan because of Muhammad bin Ishaq.Ibn Ishaq said, "The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was born on a Monday, twelve nights into the month of Rabi Awwal, in the Year of the Elephant." I say, that corresponds to the twenty-third of April in the year 571 of the birth of Christ . His father Abdullah died while his mother Aminah was pregnant with him.The biographers mention that Abdullah stayed with his wife Aminah bint Wahb in her family's house for three days, following the custom of the Arabs in the pre-Islamic era. Then he moved with her to his father's house. He did not stay with her long, for he set out for Sham on a trading trip and left her pregnant.Abdullah remained on this journey for several months. Then, on his way back from Sham, he stopped with the maternal uncles of his father Abdul-Muttalib, Banu Adi bin Najjar, in Madinah, to rest from the hardship of travel. It so happened that he fell ill while staying with them, so he remained there while his companions returned to Makkah.Through them, Abdul-Muttalib learned of his son's illness, so he sent his eldest son Harith to bring his brother back. No sooner had Harith arrived in Madinah than he learned of the death of his brother Abdullah. He was buried in the house of Nabigha of Banu Najjar, and that was in the month of Shaban, four months before the incident of the Elephant.Ibn Saad said, quoting Waqidi, "Nabigha was a man from Banu Adi bin Najjar, and the house was such that when you entered it, the small chamber was on your left." His maternal uncles informed him of his illness, of how they had attended to him and taken charge of his affairs, and that they had buried him. So he returned to his father and told him, and Abdul-Muttalib and his brothers and sisters grieved for him intensely.At that time the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was still unborn. Abdullah was twenty-five years old when he died.
