I came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as part of a delegation, and they did not consider me the most distinguished among them. I said, "Messenger of Allah, we claim that you are one of us."He replied, "We are the descendants of Nadr bin Kinanah. We do not cast aspersions on our mother, nor do we disown our father."
Ibn Majah (2612), Ahmad (21839), Diya in al-Mukhtara (1489, 148), and Ibn Abu Asim in al-Ahad wal-Mathani (897, 2425) all reported it through the hadith of Hammad bin Salama, from Aqeel bin Talha Sulami, from Muslim bin Haysam, from Ashath bin Qays, who said, then he narrated it. Its chain is hasan because of Muslim bin Haysam, for his hadith is hasan.Ashath bin Qays used to say, "I would not be brought a man who disowned a man of Quraysh from Nadr bin Kinana without flogging him." As for his statement, "We claim that you are one of us," it is said that this is because the Prophet ﷺ had a grandmother from Kinda, who was Umm Kilab bin Murra, and that is what Ashath meant. As for his statement, "We do not trace our lineage through our mother," it means we do not follow the mothers in tracing lineage while abandoning the fathers. It is also said to mean, we do not accuse him nor slander her, from the verb "qafahu" meaning to accuse someone of something not true of him.As for what was reported from Abbas bin Abdul-Muttalib, who said, I said, "O Messenger of Allah, Quraysh sat together discussing their lineages among themselves, and they likened you to a palm tree growing in a low patch of ground." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Allah created creation and made me from the best of them, from the best of their two groups, and the best of the two groups. Then He chose among the tribes and made me from the best tribe. Then He chose among the households and made me from the best of their households. So I am the best of them in self and the best of them in household." This is daif.Tirmidhi (3607) reported it from Yusuf bin Musa Baghdadi, who said, Ubaydullah bin Musa narrated to us, from Ismail bin Abu Khalid, from Yazid bin Abu Ziyad, from Abdullah bin Harith, from Abbas bin Abdul-Muttalib, then he narrated it. Tirmidhi said, "A hasan hadith." I say, Yazid bin Abu Ziyad is daif by agreement of the scholars, and he has been described as having a poor memory. Among the evidence of his poor memory is that he narrated this hadith in various forms. In one instance he narrated it as mentioned above, and in another, from Abdullah bin Harith bin Abdul-Muttalib, from Rabia, who said, it reached the Prophet ﷺ that some people had spoken ill of him and said of him, "Muhammad is like a palm tree growing on a dung heap." The Messenger of Allah ﷺ became angry, and he narrated something similar. Hakim (3/247) reported it through another route from Yazid bin Abu Ziyad with his chain, then narrated it, and he was silent about it.In yet another version, from Abdullah bin Harith, from Muttalib bin Abu Wada, who said, Abbas came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ as though he had heard something. The Prophet ﷺ stood on the pulpit and said, "Who am I?" They said, "You are the Messenger of Allah." He said, "I am Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Abdul-Muttalib. Allah created creation and made me from the best group of them. Then He made them two groups and made me in the best group of them. Then He made tribes and made me in the best tribe. Then He made them into households and made me in the best household of them and the best of them in self." Tirmidhi (3608) also reported this from Muhammad bin Ghaylan, who said, Abu Ahmad narrated to us, who said, Sufyan narrated to us, from Yazid bin Abu Ziyad, from Ubaydullah bin Harith, with his chain, then he narrated it.Tirmidhi also reported it (3532) with the same chain, saying in it "and the best of them in lineage" instead of "and the best of them in self." Ahmad (1788) reported it from Abu Naeem, from Sufyan, in the same manner. Then Tirmidhi also reported it (3758) from Qutayba, who said, Abu Awana narrated to us, from Yazid bin Abu Ziyad, from Abdullah bin Harith, who said, Abdul-Muttalib bin Rabia bin Harith bin Abdul-Muttalib narrated to me that Abbas bin Abdul-Muttalib came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ angry while I was with him, and he said, "What has angered you?" He said, "What business do we have with Quraysh? When they meet among themselves, they meet with cheerful faces, but when they meet us, they meet us otherwise." So the Messenger of Allah ﷺ became angry until his face turned red, then he said, "By the One in whose hand is my soul, faith will not enter the heart of a man until Allah and His Messenger are dearer to him than you." Then he said, "O people, whoever harms my uncle has harmed me, for a man's uncle is like a branch of his father's trunk."Tirmidhi said of the previous narrations, "Hasan," and he said of this narration, "Hasan sahih." Ahmad (1772) and Hakim (3/333) both reported it through another route from Yazid bin Abu Ziyad with his chain, in abbreviated form, and Hakim was silent about it. All of this indicates the inconsistency of Yazid bin Abu Ziyad.
