The Messenger of Allah ﷺ was asked, "Who is the noblest of people?"He replied, "The most God-fearing among them."They said, "That is not what we are asking you about."He said, "Then the noblest of people is Yusuf, the prophet of Allah, son of the prophet of Allah, son of the prophet of Allah, son of the friend of Allah."They said, "That is not what we are asking you about."He said, "Then are you asking me about the noble lineages of the Arabs? People are like ores. The best of them in the days of ignorance are the best of them in Islam, provided they gain understanding of the religion."
Bukhari narrated it in the hadiths of the Prophets (3383), and Muslim in the Virtues (2379), both from the hadith of Ubaydullah, who said, "Saeed bin Abu Saeed informed me, from Abu Hurairah," and he related it.His statement, "Yusuf, a prophet, the son of a prophet..." indicates his prophethood alone, without the rest of his brothers, who were twelve in number as mentioned before. This is the view of the majority of the scholars. A group of scholars held that they were all prophets, citing as evidence His statement, "Say, 'We believe in Allah and what has been revealed to us and what has been revealed to Ibrahim, Ismail, Ishaq, Yaqub, and the Asbat, and what was given to Musa and Isa, and what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and to Him we submit.'" [Baqarah 2:136]They said that what is meant by the Asbat is the twelve sons of Yaqub, to whom all of Banu Israil trace their lineage. However, the prophethood of all of these has not been established, even in the books of the People of the Book. So what is meant by the Asbat here are the tribes of Banu Israil among whom prophets appeared, the most well known of them being Musa, Dawud, Sulayman, and Isa, peace be upon them.
