We were with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he said,"When death approached the Prophet of Allah Nuh ﷺ, he said to his son, 'I am giving you my final instructions. I command you to do two things and forbid you from two things.I command you to say "There is no god but Allah," for if the seven heavens and the seven earths were placed on one side of a scale and "There is no god but Allah" were placed on the other, "There is no god but Allah" would outweigh them. And if the seven heavens and the seven earths were a sealed ring, "There is no god but Allah" along with "Glory be to Allah and praise be to Him" would shatter them, for it is the prayer of every created thing, and through it creation is granted sustenance. And I forbid you from associating partners with Allah and from arrogance.'"The narrator said, I asked, or it was asked, "Messenger of Allah, we know what associating partners with Allah is, but what is arrogance? Is it that one of us has a fine pair of sandals with fine straps?"He answered, "No."The questioner said, "Is it that one of us has a fine garment to wear?"He answered, "No."The questioner said, "Is arrogance that one of us has a riding animal to ride?"He answered, "No."The questioner said, "Is it that one of us has companions who sit with him?"He answered, "No."It was asked, "Messenger of Allah, then what is arrogance?"He replied, "It is rejecting the truth and looking down on people."
Ahmad narrated it (6583) from Sulayman bin Harb, who said, Hammad bin Zayd narrated to us, from Saqab bin Zuhayr, from Zayd bin Aslam. Hammad said, I think it is from Ata bin Yasar, from Abdullah bin Amr, who said, and he mentioned it.This doubt from Hammad bin Zayd does not affect the soundness of the hadith, because Imam Ahmad also narrated it (7101) through another route without the doubt, saying, Wahb bin Jareer narrated to us, my father narrated to us, I heard Saqab bin Zuhayr narrating from Zayd bin Aslam, from Ata bin Yasar, from Abdullah bin Amr, and he mentioned something similar.Hafiz Ibn Kathir said in Bidayah wa Nihayah (1/280), "This is a sahih chain, and they did not report it." He also said, Abu Qasim Tabarani narrated it from the hadith of Abdul-Rahim bin Sulayman, from Muhammad bin Ishaq, from Amr bin Dinar, from Abdullah bin Amr, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "Part of Nuh's advice to his son was, I command you with two qualities, and I forbid you from two qualities," and he mentioned something similar.Bazzar narrated it (3069, Kashf Astar) and placed it within the musnad of Abdullah bin Umar bin Khattab. Ibn Kathir said, "It appears that it is from Abdullah bin Amr bin As, as Ahmad and Tabarani narrated it."
