On the day of Hunayn, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ took a tuft of fur from the side of a camel and said, "People, nothing of what Allah has granted you as spoils is lawful for me, not even the equivalent of this, except for the fifth, and even the fifth is returned to you."
أخذ رسول الله ﷺ يوم حنين وبرة من جنب بعير فقال: يا أيها الناس إنه لا يحل لي مما أفاء الله عليكم قدر هذه إلا الخمس والخمس مردود عليكم.
Narrated by Nasai (4138), Ahmad (22718), and Bayhaqi (6/303), all through two chains from Abu Ishaq Fazari, from Abdul-Rahman bin Ayyash, from Sulayman bin Musa, from Makhul, from Abu Salam, from Abu Umama Bahili, from Ubada bin Samit, who said, then he mentioned the hadith. Its chain is hasan because of Abdul-Rahman bin Ayyash, who is Abdul-Rahman bin Harith bin Abdullah bin Ayyash. There is disagreement about him, but his hadith is hasan when he does not err.As for Abu Salam, who is Mamtur, Abu Hatim said, "His narration from Abu Umama is mursal." This is what he said, but Abu Salam's hearing from him has indeed been established as sahih, as in Sahih Muslim (804:252), where Zayd said that he heard Abu Salam say, "Abu Umama Bahili narrated to me," and then he mentioned the hadith about the merit of reciting the Quran. This shows that a lack of knowledge does not necessarily mean a lack of existence. I have mentioned this repeatedly in Jami Kamil.
