Whenever the Messenger of Allah ﷺ obtained spoils of war, he would order Bilal to make an announcement to the people. They would bring forward what they had taken, and he would set aside the fifth share and distribute the rest. Some time after this, a man came carrying a halter made of hair and said, "Messenger of Allah, this was part of what we took from the spoils."The Messenger of Allah ﷺ asked, "Did you hear Bilal making the announcement three times?"The man replied, "Yes."He said, "Then what kept you from bringing it forward?"The man offered his excuse, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, "You yourself will come bringing it on the Day of Resurrection, for I will not accept it from you."
Reported by Abu Dawud (2712), Ahmad (6996), and Ibn Hibban declared it sahih (4809), and Hakim (2/127 and 129), all of them through routes from Abdullah bin Shawzab, who said, Amir bin Abdul-Wahid told me, from Abdullah bin Burayda, from Abdullah bin Amr, and he related it. Its chain is hasan because of Amir bin Abdul-Wahid, for his hadith is hasan. Hakim said, "This is a hadith sahih in its chain."
